5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Rich & Deep Cartoon 12 Dec 2010
The X-Men cartoon series stands head and shoulders above pretty much any non-comedy cartoon series devised. This boxed set contains the 13 episodes from Season 1 and the 13 from Season 2 split across 4 DVDs. There are no extras. The animation quality might not quite match that produced 20 years later but over the two series, the animation becomes sharper and is much more attractive than modern interpretations of the X-Men cartoon. The boxed set cover on this product is not very attractive but this reviewer is fortunate enough to have picked up the alternative cover set at a reasonable price.

What made X Men the cartoon so good was the continuity and depth of characterisation. These characters adapt to the world around them. The team are introduced into a battle against giant robots called Sentinels and the action is high tempo throughout but it is the characters themselves that are the excellence here. It admittedly does not open too positively by having Jubilee as the focus - the stereotype of the street rat kid who is saved by the heroes and then taken under their wing is just about the only glaring cliche of the two series.

Season 1 begins some of the underlying themes of the overall cartoon including most explicitly the love triangle bewteen Cyclops, Jean-Grey, and Wolverine, and the anti-mutant sentiment prevailing in society. The battle between the Friends of Humanity and the X-Men might not have the complex political connotations the surface level plot suggests but it is accessible to younger viewers and involved enough for older ones.

That the programme has the ability to keep young minds entertained with enough action while also leaving adults with something to see makes for good family viewing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Xelent! 9 Aug 2010
I have watched through all the Spider Mans, some of the Batmans and also episodes of The Hulk and Iron Man. X-men is by far the best out of them all with some great story lines and good animation for the time. I like the fact that some episodes concentrate on an induvidual characters story and others show how they work together as a team. I love the variety in the X-men seasons and it leaves you wanting to learn more about each character. The episodes are set all around the world and sometimes in different time eras- so you are garunteed something new and exciting in each episode. You will not be dissapointed in this purchase- I certainly wasn't.

5.0 out of 5 stars X-cellent!! 11 Aug 2011
It's been 20 years since I last watched this. It was mesmerizing then and still is today. The graphics are fantastic, especially since each episode has been remastered for better clarity and sound - this has in no way taken away the original quality of each episode.

The overall plot lines are compelling and thought provoking - from the perspective that all beings are equal and that discrimination is unfair. The action is brilliant. Watching these episodes satisfies my inner child better than ice cream and jelly!!

Simply put - let your inner child out and buy the series - you won't be disappointed at all.
