Officially a kids' cartoon show, X-Men is in fact great entertainment. This selection of episodes contains the whole Dark Phoenix Saga, 'Orphan's End', a splendid exploration of Cyclops, and "Jugganaut Returns", which explores the relationship between Professor X and his evil step-Brother Cain Marko. Due to the nature of the show, Jean Grey/Phoenix destroys an uninhabited star system and only cripples a Shi'ar starship, where in the comic book she casually commits genocide and mass-murder, and the Hellfire club becomes the 'Circle Club', but still, the show is as faithful as it could be to the originals. Wisely Jubilee is absent from all of these episodes.

The Dark Phoenix saga is truly awesome, making as few concessions to being a kids' show as were possible. Even the re-named 'Circle Club' is in fact the Hell-Fire Club in all but name, even don to the 18th century garb of the male members (and the scanty garb of Jean Gray and Emma Frost). Fans of the British adventure series 'The Avengers' will recognise an in-joke in the name of the Circle Club's evil mastermind, Jason Wyngarde. With family reuinons, the death of Jean Gray, and the fate of the waorld hanging in the balance, the viewer will find Marvel angst a-plenty here! In 'Orphan's End' we have Cyclops as concerned to do the right thing as ever, even if it means turning his Dad over to Shi'ar cops, and in 'Jugganaut Returns', Professor X saves the life of the step-brother who hates him.

Good fun, too.

X Men Series 3 Volume 3 takes the X Men back into space and it is a terrific set of episodes. 4 of the 6 episodes are the Dark Phoenix saga featuring the return of Jean and the Shi'ar. The moral philosophy is more overt in this volume than in previous ones where it always featured in the background. Through the Dark Phoenix saga, the question remains whether it is right to do harm to an innocent in order to prevent the destruction of many others. Interestingly, the saga comes to the right conclusion on that question rather than the politically correct one.

Dark Phoenix is a fearsomely destructive force but Jean is not. Jean as one of the original X Men, as the lover of Cyclops, and as Wolverine's unrequited love is protected by her team-mates. The Shi'ar intervene to try and eliminate her after she takes out a solar system.

The Phoenix is released because of the Inner Circle who appear to be loosely based on various British television shows from the 1960s and 70s. The Inner Circle are probably the least competent of the villainous groups because they are continually feuding with and scheming against one another. This is possibly because if they worked together, the X Men would have a hard time overcoming the group. The powers of the mind are to the fore with villain Mastermind successfully creating an illusory vision that convinces Jean/Phoenix that her rightful place is in the Inner Circle. The greed of the Circle is ultimately too much though and it releases Dark Phoenix.

The intervention of the Shi'ar is a little bit of a cliche because it resorts to trial by combat which is a staple of space fare even if space-based civilisations would be thousands of years beyond the time when such a trial was common in human society. Anyway, it is good fun to see the X Men take on the powerful Shi'ar including Gladiator and the mental quandry most go through as they try to work out what cause it is they are actually fighting for.

Following the saga are two backstories. The follow-up to the Starjammer incident from Vol 1 tells much more of the upbringing of Cyclops. The return of Juggernaut is a rare bit of character development for Professor X. The last couple of episodes are not as great as the first four but they are a reasonable come-down following an excellent saga.

Dark Phoenix 14 Jan 2010
By Darktan
This features on of the best sagas in the cartoon series- the dark phoenix saga- where jean grey/phoenix is corrupted and the xmen and the Shi'ar are forced to stop her.The juggernaut returns is probably the weakest episode. Overall worth getting.
