As another reviwer has said, the cover of this one is misleading, no Dark Phoenix yet. The Phoenix Saga, however, is done wonderfully, with a perfect mad emperor, and the wise absence of Jubilee from the main team. She works, but not in that sort of story. While a few changes have been made to accomodate the '90s team, and the fact that this is a series for family viewing (Wolverine's not allowed to slice up the bad guys with his claws), it retains all the X-citement of the original (sorry, couldn't resist).

I for one cheered when Gladiator turned up and trounced the bad guys with his rather familiar powers, and the animation is quite up to the demands made on it. What is more, although adapting the comics, it does not require the viewer to know what happened in the comics. Some of the best episodes on the show, though I wish they'd have special features on the discs. Mind you, it's better than trying to find fuzzy versions on YouTube!

Well worth getting!

First things first-this dvd does not contain the episodes dealing with the DARK Phoenix saga. It may be on the cover, but not once does Jean don the red and gold outfit and thirst for chaos. Instead these episodes deal with the PHOENIX saga-no red and gold, no planet destroying but still excellent viewing. The first two episodes are a little mddling-out of the past pts one and two deal with an alien 'spirit drinker' capturing souls-although its nice to see Yuriko/Deathstryke and the Reavers make an appearance. The five episode epic of the Phoenix saga is something else-it's brilliant. A classic comic book tale, re-told perfectly-albeit with a different rota of x-men, featuring great turns from Juggernaught, Black Tom, Banshee and Moira McTaggert. Lilandra makes her long awaited appearance and the story of a mad king wanting ultimate power is fabulous. Some tender moments with Jean and Xavier's self doubting outweigh some slightly dodgy animation (Jean's head appearing on top of the Phoenix entity for example.) The story is still perfect almost a decade on from it's release. Only a lack of special features and some poor episodes on the disk make it loose a star. I AM PHOENIX!!!!!!!!!

X Men Series 3 vol 1 continues the excellence from Series 1 & 2. Series 3 is double the size of the other series and perhaps with good reason because it is outstanding. The main plotline in 3.1 is the Phoenix Saga (not the Dark Phoenix as shown on the cover) with 5 of the 7 episodes explicitly being that saga and the other two being preludes to it.

The first two episodes of the series are partly an introduction to the Phoenix Saga and partly Wolverine backstory. The reappearance of Yuriko into Wolverine's life is emotional for Wolverine and his character is rounded by the relationship he once had. Yuriko, the Morlocks, and Wolverine find an alien space craft and unwittingly unleash a monster. This introduces space as an X Men setting for the first time, a setting into which the Shi'ar burst. The monster that is unleashed is a great opponent in that it is highly threatening but has a weakness that is only eventually discovered, good cartoon fare.

The adventures in space bring in a whole new set of characters in the form of the Shi'ar. Emporer D'Ken and the Emporess Lilandra are the main features but their supporting cast are what make it interesting - Gladiator in particular has some good banter with Rogue. The Starjammers make a crucial appearance under leader Corsair in a storyline that doesn't yet get tied up.

Phoenix is what this set of episodes is presumably most remembered for. Her arrival is excellent in that it brings in a new phenomenon but more importantly shakes up the existing relationships within the X Men, especially in respect of Cyclops.

The animation seems to have changed slightly from Series 1 & 2 and there were clearly some attempts to jazz up the intro music. Not sure either was necessary of an improvement. The animation for Xavier isn't great and the best intro music was the original intro music. Still, this is high calibre stuff and Season 3 of X Men is arguably the best series of the best cartoon ever produced.
