I grew up on the seres in the 90's and the comics and i dont care what some nostalgic people think; this show rocks. it is way better. (than the 90s series) i saw some repeats on cartoon network of the original series and it kinda sux now. they wear their uniforms all the time; (wolverine at the opera wearin yellow spandex is a typical example.) everyone's abilities were just represented by the same energy beam. (ie jeans telekinesis was manifested by a beam coming out of her forehead that barely distinguished her powers from cyclops'. if you see what i mean) This show is much more grounded in the real New York City. The animation is fantastic and the decision to put the students in a public high school setting adds a whole new dynamic to the show; allowing for a lot more dramatic interplay and forcing the metaphors that made the x men so great to the surface, but still in a subtle effective way. it's true that the show gets much better toward the third and fourth season; with the advent of Apocalypse etc. but these first six episodes from season two are still fantastic to watch. the extra features aren't bad either. there's a brief introduction to each episode by the producer, providing useful insight into the introduction of the characters and the excellent decision to make scott and jeans relationship in the hybrid stages. scott has always been my least fav. x man; way too squeaky clean; but now his characters far more 3 dimensional, even more so than the film because of the fact that he pines for jean, but she's going out with the high school jock. my only complaint is that in the US they've had the whole first season out on dvd, and we're getting really random releases. (this is the first region two release, followed by in feb some from season one then in march the first part of season one. doesn't make sense.)theres also chatracter profiles for all the x men and the brotherhood. evolution is a fantastic series. go sign the petition to get it recomissioned for a fifth season at

The story lines are flimsy and the characters simplistic. This is not the quality you might expect from marvel. Its aimed at a young audience but could have been so much more.

This is the third cartoon to bear the X-Men name. There was the original 80's X-Men, the (best) 90's cartoon, and now Evolution, presumably set before the first two series, or so you think.
The problem is, the numerous incarnations of the X-Men all seem to tell the story differently.
We have the comics, the three cartoon series and now the movies -all setting the characters in a different origin to the other.
If you're going for the cartoons though, the best is by far the 90's series - pure action, with an underlying storyline and a fantastic theme tune.
Evolution seems to have fallen into the trap of most recent cartoons - it's no longer interesting and can only really appeal to children.
The 90's series dealt with very adult themes at times, and although the quality of animation seems a little choppy these days, it still stands as the best X-Men cartoon series.
The plus for Evolution, then, is that it has good quality animation. Just needs those darker and more interesting storylines now.
