Cut out the gum-ball superheroes and enter a world where a hero will kill you as quickly as a villain. This imagining of a world where Xavier died is one of the most powerful visions of the X-Universe out there. The grit and doomed nature of the Age of Apocalypse comes through in every story, but you also have characters you care about and want to see escape what you know will happen eventually.

Only four out of five stars because some of the art isn't amazing. Dont let that disuade you from an excellent story that showcases characters regular X-book readers will know and not know all at once.

Format: Paperback
The Age of Apocalypse has been a cult favorite to many X-Men fans. The story is simply epic and it is fantastic to see it reprinted across 4 massive volumes.

In a world without Xavier, a grim alternate world awaited us. It was an incredible story that I enjoy as much now, as i did when i was 10 years old.

Unfortunately the final volume of the series is somewhat lacking. It concludes the excellent main story of the Age of Apocalypse about halfway through the book and then packages a lot of filler material that loosely relates to the fallout of the AoA which I found rather unsatisfactory.

In my opinion, it would have been best to finish with the natural conclusion of the Age of Apocalypse and not throw in some other material to add bulk.

So in conclusion - 5* for the complete story, 3* for volume four.

I read the first half of the Age of Apocalypse back when it was originally printed in the 90's however I was never able to finish it as my local store stopped stocking it and I was only about 10 years old so couldn't really get the train to London to pick up the last issues.

Finally this year I decided to finish the story and bought all 4 books on Amazon. I was not dissapointed. The world in the AOA is a darker, grittier more mature world showing how various characters would change given different environmental circumstances.

The only negative points I could make about this final AOA book, is that the story ends (lovely) BUT then it goes on to include 2 issues of X-Man (#53 and #54) which are completely unessasary.
They show Nate in a situation and you have no idea how it got there (having not read issues #5-#53) and as they would have originally been released several years AFTER the original AOA ended, they add nothing what so ever to the story and more than anything they ust detract from the true poignant ending of the story.

There is also a short story showing the xmen universe back to normal, which was OK, but again, it detracts from the true ending.

If it weren't for these filler stories this book would easily be a 5/5 but becuase of this, im marking down to a 4/5.
