this film excels the first in almost every way. The script, action and SFX, and the magnificent locales are all stunning. The two-disc version is probably the best value for money, but if you're a purist, the extras will be rather dull. The Nghtcrawler sequence is the best, however.
The script is well written, with many plot twists, and a strangely VERY evil villain, Stryker, who I thought was a lot more evil than Magneto. The acting is spot-on, the casting was perfect, and Hugh Jackman was made to play Wolverine. The best character was Magneto, an acting veteran who slips into the role like water. He is perfect; those spooky eyes, that expression, and that enigmatic-ness that a villain needs! The SFX, as I said are stupendous, the highlight being the tornado vs. missiles showdown. It is pacey, and although it may not have the storyline of an Ian Rankin or Danielle Steel, it rollocks on at a superb speed, with plenty of plot twists etc; etc; to keep even the most critical Rankin fan at bay. The plot has CLEARLY benefited from the high budget.
One bad point though, some of the characters are left grossly underdeveloped, for example, Cyclops. James Marsden sleep-walks through his role. I've watched this DVD plenty of times, and although it has a rather Spielbergian running time, it is certainly not a Spielbergian film, it has a style all its own, albeit a tad cliched. Better than the original, and well worth the £16 for the extras...get this!
