I hate compilations. They should be reserved for collections of pop tunes or lists of hit singles.

That a band such as Brand X should have lowered themselves to a 'best of' collection at first depressed me. However, on hearing this superb compilation I now consider it to be one of the best examples of how to showcase the life works of a band.

Each track really stands up on its own and all of the skills of Percy Jones, Robin Lumley and John Goodsall are presented to perfection with a mixture of original studio tracks and new live versions. Oh and of course that little known drummer Phil Collins who occasionally turned up.

For once a compilation album that can be enjoyed in it's own right without comparison back to the original albums.

Brand X , The X Files... One Guy`s Opinion 27 Dec 1999
By Mark A. Wellman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is the first I have heard from Brand X since the early 80`s. Disc 1 contains mostly live cuts from various times and places, going from recently to the past. The playing is great and so are the tunes, but the sound is sometimes rather raw. Disc 2 contains cuts from various projects Goodsall and Jones have been involved in outside of Brand X. Some of it is good, while some of it will never vibrate my speakers again.Drum fans will enjoy the variety of excellent drummers. If you want to get into Brand X, this is not the best place to start( go back to the late 70`s stuff). This one has some excellent moments but would have probably been better as one disc, rather than two.

"Uh oh he's been using Brand X" 19 Nov 1999

An embarassment. Steer clear of this one folks. Just when you thought these guys were the last real "fusion" types about...Since when did the last great secret of the fusion world start taking pointers from Joe Satriani and listening to old Al DiMeola pratice sessions? Where the hell is Phil when you need him, oh yes, Tarzan. The star is for the Bruford and Wilding/Bonus tracks, and well does one really want those?
