Amazon.co.uk Review

Tokyo is the city where the final battle between the Dragon of Earth and the Dragon of Heaven will take place in the Japanese anime film X, directed by Taro Rin and written by the all-woman writing team Clamp. The Dragon of Earth wants to wipe out humankind because of the damage people have inflicted on the Earth, while the Dragon of Heaven is fighting to protect civilisation. At the centre of all this is Kamui, the chosen one, who must pick a dragon to fight for.

Full of dreams and flashbacks that pop up out of nowhere, the structure of X could be considered confusing and needlessly complex if the story weren't so simple. Obviously, we are supposed to root for the Dragon of Heaven to win and save mankind, but the funny thing is, the Dragon of Earth has the better argument. If it were a debate, humanity would lose. But it's not a debate, it's an action film, and many of Tokyo's most famous buildings get destroyed in the battles. As with most anime, the women are either girlishly cute or slutty, but luckily in X, there are no graphic rapes; the love interest is merely crucified three or four times. It may not be the greatest anime film out there, but at least it's never boring. --Andy Spletzer

This has got to be my favourite Anime! It’s got everything you would expect from Japanimation – it's fast, colourful and has a larger-than-life story line (saving the world, no less). The dark, dreamlike images are perfectly complemented by the soundtrack, the pictures are breathtakingly beautiful and the animation is among the best I have seen. And I just love the very Japanese look of the characters!

I don’t agree with the other reviewers that it is hard to keep track of the story line - I didn’t have this problem at all. Sure, it’s a bit of a challenge but that’s half the fun. When watching Anime, don’t expect Western-style characters and an easy-peasy, spoon-fed story. If that’s what you want, Anime is not for you.

The title its self explains the movie. 'X' is a bizarre title as bizarre as the movie. In a nutshell the whole movie is good vs evil..... but with a slight twist, there are two sides the dragons of the earth - these want to destroy mankind, they believe by destroying mankind that the earth will be saved. The other group are the dragons of heaven - they believe that mankind should be saved.

Both have valid reasons and both make good points, it is a more of a debate about the 'real' world than anything, telling people that the earth needs to be saved and will probably be destroyed if we don't start recycling (before George W Bush got in power). The movie is very dream like and is surreal. There is a lot of violence (like all manga), some scenes that question religion hence the title but im not going to give it away, all in all this movie should be watched.

This is one of those anime movies that will by its nature create two camps - the ones who love it and the ones who hate it.

Bit of a disappointment
Having watched the series of X (which is amazing, but sadly hasn't been brought out on region 2), I thought I'd invest in the film version, especially as it was only Ł3. Read more

Hmm...
This is a bit pants, really. The cover looks enticing, and it's from a famous all-female animation studio known as 'Clamp'. Sorry, I still don't care. Read more
