Book Description

The X-15 was the ultimate "X" vehicle. Built in the 1950s, she became the fastest and highest-flying winged aircraft of its time. During 199 flights from 1959 through 1968, she collected data about hypersonic flight that was invaluable to aeronautics and to developers of the space shuttle. This book describes the genesis of the program, the design and construction of the aircraft, years of research flights and the experiments that flew aboard them. 600 plus pages of illustrations, photographs, and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Detailed history of the X15 program 21 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
An excellent history of the complete X15 program including the details of the airframe and rocket motors' evolving design. As a read, it flows reasonably well, quite an acomplishment for a technical book such as this. If you just want to know a little about the X15 and pretty pictures then this is not the book for you, if you want the engineering and program details, go for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Freely available... 19 Feb. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is available FREE from NASA themselves in their eBook collection.

PDF format so can be read by just about anyone on any device.

The formatting issues with some of the images (flight logs at the end included) are still apparent though.

Doesn't take away this is likely to be the most informative single book for those interested in test aircraft, straight from the horses mouth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Detailed and compehensive 5 Sept. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This book gives an excellent technical account of the X 15 project and its results. It covers both political and financial challeges. I would have welcomed more from the pilots on what it was like to meet the challeges of flying the aircraft. I gained the impression that, in quoting from his many and varied sources, the author did not always understand some of the terms being used. Overall a good read.

This is a very detailed account of all aspects of the x-15 programme. Not every reader will want to read all the detail on every aspect, or follow all the notes, so I have found, reading it on a Kindle, that it is very useful to set a bookmark on the 'Contents' page, which is very comprehensive, so that one can return to it and select the chapters one is interested in.
