Product Description

Product Description

The Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean are linked both by geography the forest forming the eastern rim of the valley for much of the Wye's lower reaches and by history, since they share a common heritage as a border between England and Wales. The imposing ruins of medieval castles in the area are a striking reminder of ancient warfare in the area. This guide focuses on the middle and lower sections of the Wye Valley, roughly where the river leaves its upper reaches in mid-Wales to enter Herefordshire. Hay-on-Wye, Hereford and the walled town of Chepstow are also covered, as is the classic view over the winding Wye Valley from Symonds Yat.

These guides are brilliant. The walks are arranged with the shortest at the beginning of the book and the longest at the end, so if you haven't done much walking you can ease yourself in gently.

Each walk is detailed over about five pages. There is a Ordnance Survey map showing the complete walk, though they are not large and I would therefore advise you to take a 1:25000 map of the area and a compass that you know how to use. There is a general description of the walk with points corresponding to the map and advice on where to park the car or catch a bus.

I would consider the Pathfinder series to be the best available, as the descriptions of the walks compared to my experiences of these walks mean that the authors must have actually done them.

We have loads of these walking books and they re the best on the market. They have the os map included as a picture so you don't have to carry the maps with you and invest in loads if you walk in many different locations. They now have GPS coordinates too so are even better. Directions are great and the timings given are usually generous, we normally knock at least 30 min off each one.

Pathfinder guides are always good quality, especially when you have an accurate map included. Sometimes it seems that the routes are a little involved, but they often take you to some hidden gems.
