Product Description

Cochran Wilder disappeared fifteen years ago while on a walking holiday in Cornwall. Recently released from a psychiatric hospital after being convicted of indecent assault, he had been a serious embarrassment to his father, a prominent MP. Now his body has been found, buried in the dunes. It is clear that he was murdered. Wycliffe suspects the involvement of six people, now well-established figures in the community, who at the time had been spending an illicit weekend at a chalet near where Wilder's body was found. All are disturbed by Wycliffe's interest and by a series of threatening anonymous communications. But then a second murder is committed and the investigation takes on a new urgency ...

About the Author

W.J. Burley lived near Newquay in Cornwall, and was a schoolmaster until he retired to concentrate on his writing. His many Wycliffe books include, most recently, Wycliffe and the Guild of Nine. He died in 2002.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wycliffe's always a winner, 1 April 2007
Wycliffe indulges in a little introspection of the "Who am I?" type before settling into the 15 year old unsolved case of the missing, now dead,Cochran Wilder. He's still very concerned with food and finding a decent place for lunch - and always succeeds; Helen's still in the kitchen producing the delicious comfort food he craves. Does this detective think with his stomach? Wycliffe needs a woman - Helen at home and Lucy at work. He's a regular guy and my favourite detective - his sensitive nature and sometimes less than confident disposition makes him so appealing. He does a splendid job but sometimes I feel he would be happier in the quiet life of university or a "good" school - like his creator. The 6 central characters are introduced as typical students and end as disparate, untrusting and unhappy 30 somethings bonded forever by an illicit week-end. Then there's the eccentric Badger. Where does he fit in? Strange that he's related to 2 of the characters. It all gels to form a compelling read. Give me more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wycliffe And The Dunes Mystery, 28 Aug 2007
By Callisto (Exmouth England) - See all my reviews
I enjoyed this story. However, as with so many writers, the grammar was inconsistent. The phrases, 'Each Other,' and 'One Another,' being used wrongly, at times, when relating, to two people, and two or more people. Jack Shephers, plays the part well, and with sensitivity, making his character believable. Cornwall is brought to lfe, well, and was more so, and still is, on T.V. The retrospective line, going back to the 1970's was imaginative. G.G.'s character was sad, a middle aged woman, who was still promiscuous, and selfish regarding marrued men, and sneered a D.I. Kersey's marriage.

The word B----y, being used needlessly, particularly by D.I. Kersey. He comes over, as different from his T.V. persona. The T.V.Series did a good job, on the whole. I found the provision of only one type of meal, at the hotel, where they stayed for a time, hard to believe, and the fact, that none of them had different diets, including vegetarian, for a story, set in the 1990's. Many would object to eating rabbit, and meat, particularly red meat. The former are kept as pets by some.
