Book Description

7 Nov 2002 Wycliffe Series

A bizarre murder shakes the Cornish village of Moresk. Arriving at church on Easter morning the vicar discovers the body of a woman sprawled across the chancel steps. Has the church been desecrated by a Satanist ritual? Chief Superintendent Wycliffe sees the crime more as an expression of hatred directed at others in the community, besides the dead woman.

His investigation, however, is frustrated at every turn, and when another horrific murder is committed Wycliffe thinks he knows who the killer is. But can he prove it?

Review

"Dead is Jessica Dobbell, a woman who cleaned the church in the town of Moresk and led a life of well-documented promiscuity, including among her conquests her twin sister's husband. Jessica's body is found in the church on Easter morning, posed near the altar with her clothes pulled apart; five keys on the organ are forced down with wedges of paper in a pattern of notes that must be a clue. There is a teenaged boy whom everyone assumes to be gay, a pastor whose sexual orientation is less obvious, a couple who had lived with the dead woman and have clearly fallen from grace, and various other dark souls, virtually all of whom bore a grudge against Jessica and possess a modicum of musical theory. Wycliffe insinuates himself into this small town, carefully probing at raw emotional nerves until he finds the killer...every piece of this unassuming work fits precisely." --"Publishers Weekly"

5.0 out of 5 stars Murder in church 29 Jan 2012
By Damaskcat HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Jessica Dobell is found murdered on the chancel steps in the village church. The body is only partly dressed. Wycliffe wonders whether it is some sort of ritual killing but as he digs deeper into the victim's private life it becomes clear that there are any number of people with a possible motive for wanting Jessica out of the way. There's her sister who would inherit the farm where Jessica lives for a start. The family who live with her and help around the farm are also suspects and it seems the vicar himself may have something to hide.

Wycliffe works in is habitual way - trying to get to know the people concerned and waiting for information to come to him. He watches and waits to see if people will reveal more than they think. He finds anonymous letters among Jessica's papers and the vicar's spinster sister, Celia, seems to know more about them than she should do.

This is an interesting story with some complex characters and some very odd relationships. Jessica herself seemed a mixture of contradictions at first but as the story unfolds she is painted in more graphic colours. There are plenty of red herrings littered throughout the story and it will take a perceptive reader to unravel them all and come up with the correct answer.

This is an enjoyable series if you like your crime novels in the classic mould. If you enjoy Alan Hunter's Gently series then you may well enjoy Wycliffe.

I had watched some of the Wycliffe series on tv and thought I would try one of the books. I have now read them all and must say that I prefer the books and enjoyed every one of them.

I recommend all Burley books to kindle readers. They are very interesting and enjoyable. Wycliffe is the typical English detective and one can relate the books to the television series.A well deserved five stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wycliffe & the Last Rites 14 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
This book is one of the Wycliffe books that has been in the television series. I remembered it easily, though there are some changes in the book from the television film. With knowing the story wasn't as enjoyable as all the others.

3.0 out of 5 stars Who was Jessica 12 Dec 2013

I felt cheated I did not know more of Jessica before she was killed. She seamed a really interesting person. I was angry that her killer appears to escape punishment. Each character could have been filled out. Wycliffe really solved this one with much help from his staff
4.0 out of 5 stars Cozy English Who-done It 5 Jun 2013
By Liz Malone - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
It was a cozy English mystery that kept me guessing almost to the end. Wycliffe isn't the usual detective in the fact that he is often muddled and seems to go off on tangents that usually gets him to the solution. The rest of the cast is varied in personality and both male and female which is rather an unusual cast of characters in that both sexes are very much in evidence and provide much different viewpoints in the discussions held at the end of each day as the group review all that has happened. The story quickly carries you along and it is sometimes a surprise when I find myself at the end on the same night I started to read. Not bloody or harsh in any way just a typical english mystery like the Hamish MacBeath or Agatha Raisen novels.
