This has to be the strangest wrestling dvd I've watched in a long time. Want to see Shawn Michaels team with God to face the McMahons? Oh go on then. Want to see Kane roll round the ring on his own to promote See No Evil? Sure, why not. Want to see Maria congratulate the wrong person on winning a match, seconds after it ends? If we must.

Some of this bizarreness is uncomfortable to watch, (Matt Striker berating Eugene, Mr McMahon's 'healing hands' all over Candice). Some of it is inspired, (McMahon again, channelling James Brown and Foghorn Leghorn for an in-ring dance routine). Some of it simply makes no sense whatsoever.

There's some decent wrestling fighting to escape from all this post-Attitude detritus. Carlito and Chris Masters, two superstars who've never been allowed to reach their full potential, have an entertaining opening encounter. The Umaga/Flair match exists solely to get the big Samoan over, but it does its job. The Women's Title match is next, but gets cut short when Trish shoot injures herself.

Rob Van Dam vs Shelton Benjamin has the first moments of genuine excitement, although between some spectacular spots the match doesn't really flow. Big Show vs Kane is lumbering awfulness, further hamstrung by the unfortunate necessity of having to play the voices in Kane's head over the arena's PA.

The final two matches are where the PPV really comes alive. Your enjoyment of the Michaels/McMahon match will probably depend on your tolerance for watching Vincent Kennedy repeatedly hit in the head with a chair, but Michaels could probably put on a five star match with me as his opponent. The Triple Threat Match is similarly good, with the crowd split between Triple H and John Cena and plenty of anticipation in the air.

Throughout its history, Backlash was known for being a wild party, dealing with hellacious fallouts from WrestleMania and there being plenty of brilliant action for WWE fans to sink their teeth into.

But as my fellow Amazon reviewer has stated, the 2006 event is one of the strangest shows WWE has put on in recent memory. In fact, it's downright insane, with a lot of the angles ranging from monotonous to crude (i.e. "God" being injected into the HBK/McMahon feud, the "May 19th" voices in Kane's head, Matt Striker and Eugene etc).

Yet even though Backlash 2006 has the dubious distinction of being the maddest, most ridiculous event in the show's history...it's also (bizarrely) one of the best, because of the card boasting some really strong matches.

Carlito vs. Chris Masters
A fine opener featuring two (then) promising rising stars. A full babyface-turn was on the horizon for Carlito, but because of the split-up between the former tag partners, he was still behaving quite heelishly here against Masters. Heel vs. heel match-ups are difficult to pull off, but these two succeeded in winning fashion, putting together an entertaining contest that you can't help but enjoy. (7/10)

Ric Flair vs. Umaga (w/Armando Alejandro Estrada)
Ah, Umaga (RIP). How I miss him, and Armando for that matter. I didn't think the act would ever succeed and I'm so glad I was proven wrong. Alas, the former Jamal was still in the early days of his new gimmick, and not yet over with the fans. Despite this clash against the Nature Boy being hugely dull, it demonstrated Umaga's ability to work a match and began to establish the Samoan Bulldozer as one to watch in the foreseeable future. (4/10)

Backlash 2006 came hot on the heels of wrestlemania 22 and was average enough when the truth be known, certainly there was time wasting and filler thrown in to kill the clock here but some great matches remain in the mind and thats always good.
The event opened with carlito vs chris masters, the crowd were quickly bored by this as was i,it lasted about ten minutes but seemed to last 100 minutes and thatsa bad thing, the men shared no in ring chemistry and it all got dull too fast for my liking, the ending was good enough but lumpy enough in places.
Next up was a squash match involving ric flair and umaga.i hated this,to see naitch involved in a match like this isnt good for my heart, granted the old timers are used at times to give way to younger wrestlers but i didnt like this one bit,but thats business hey.
The womens title was up next, the champ mickie james going up against trish, this feud didnt have alot going for it and this was a waste of time, trish hurt herself for real here but aside from that this was a clock killer for sure.
Next up was a match that could be the best of the night,it was a money in the bank opportunity vs the intercontiental championship, rvd vs shelton benjamin, what a match, what a match,so good,i said that twice,i loved it from the beginning to end.
Next up was a match that was terrible,so much hype with the may 19th gimmick but what the creative team didnt count on was this getting old so fast,i hated it and here they milk it like a fleet of dairy cows, this match was terrible, normally i dont ruin the endings but this was a no contest, how bad is that, shocking and a nig ploy to plug kanes film, wise up creative team, dont treat me like a baby.
