Several years ago I knew this Malaysian guy and we sort of talked about each's "10 most favourite musicals" and he included Wuthering Heights as one of them. I hadn't got the recording (also never heard about), so I bought it.
I loved it!!! And I still love it now. It's full of beautiful melodies and very well sung.
Lesley Garret gives a wonderful performance in this album as Cathy, especially in the duet with Sharon Campbell (Nellie) in One Rules My Heart. I can not think of other soprano who can sing it as beautiful as Lesley.
Dave Willets also is fine, he captures Heathcliff's desperate emotional hunger.
Some people said that the lyrics in this musical are cheesy, but it doesn't matter to me as my English is not as deep as them. The novel is very dark - and I must say that I don't like any of the characters for they are all vile- though it's one of the English literatures that can't make me stop reading until the end-- but this musical isn't that dark; it's beautiful, haunting, sweet, and charming.
Wuthering Heights also made me search for other Bernard J. Taylor's works, but none of them I love as I love this album.

This Concept CD of Wuthering Heights is only a good attempt at a classic, but to compare it would explain why it may fail to impress the masses, but their are 3 truly beautifully crafted tracks on here, 'He's Gone' , 'I belong to the earth' and 'Up here alone with you'.Dave Willetts ( Heathcliff ) is not vocally masculine enough to support such tragically written lyrics, however opera diva Leslie Garrett ( Cathy ) is very good and emotively captures the lament and despair in her tracks. It would be hard to convince people to buy this CD for a number of reasons , for instance its inconsistent and many tracks with exception to those aforementionded are ineffective and nauseating but the sheer force of poetry, musical composition, and inspirational vocals on 3 tracks is in itself worth buying it for. You dont have to be a theatre thespian to like it , its probably better for those with a completely open mind.
For the record an old friend of mine lost a relative who chose 'I belong to the earth' to be played at her funeral and everyone sobbed and asked her 'Who sang that record' ? - YOUR CHOICE THOUGH.

The music of Wuthering Heights is in my opinion among the most magnificent written for the stage in the last half century. I am not sure if Lesley Garrett is the best choice for Cathy, but her performance of "He's Gone" and "I Belong to The Earth" are terrific.
