Each volume includes a full introduction, chronology, bibliography, and explanatory notes along with a variety of documents from the period, giving readers a rich sense of the world from which the work emerged.
Note to Instructors: The Broadview edition of Wuthering Heights edited by Christopher Heywood is unusual in a number of respects. The editor advances several interesting and controversial positions concerning such issues as the setting for the novel, connections in the novel to the history of slavery, and the chapter divisions in the novel. Given the extended presentation of these arguments in a long introduction and in several appendices, the edition is longer than are most Broadview Literary Texts, and also considerably more expensive than are most of our editions of canonical works (14.95 US; 19.95 CDN; 9.99 UK). It is our expectation that this edition will be a particularly attractive candidate for upper-level courses where the instructor is interested in engaging the students with some of these issues in detail. But we draw these facts to your attention to ensure that you do not order the edition while assuming it to be a conventional edition of the sort commonly adopted at the first- or second-year level.
