Wuthering Hearts 1 Aug 2011
By Vicki @ Cosy Books TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Could a book be any cuter than Kay Woodward's Wuthering Hearts? I doubt it very much. This is the second book I've read from this author and once again I was left with a huge smile and warm fuzzy feeling inside by the end.

Like Jane Airhead before it, Wuthering Hearts takes a well known classic and makes it interesting, something you'd want to read. I can see many young people checking out the Brontės after reading these books. Wuthering Hearts isn't a retelling, but features as the school play and focus of the whole story.

Kay Woodward has a unique style of humour and wit to her writing, with some genuinely laugh out loud moments. She also captures early teenhood perfectly, with all it's worries and anxieties. Emily is such a lovely character: kind, fun with a tendency to say the wrong thing at the wrong time now and then. She's such a relatable character, so normal and someone you'd really want to be friends with at school. I really liked the budding romance in this book between Emily and the mood swinging Robert, who definitely got my sympathy when the reason for his grumpiness was revealed. It's sweet and tender, completely appropriate for pre-early teen readers who I know will adore this book.

Wuthering Hearts is a feel good, heart warming, gentle romcom and I loved it. I'd recommend this book for readers age 10-14 who will find Emily extremely relatable, the writing funny and the romance adorable. Or for those young at heart, who remember their first crush and the awkwardness which comes with a budding romance, and want a book that will leave them with a huge smile on their face.

Wuthering Hearts 12 July 2011
By Jenny, Wondrous Reads TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
It feels like I waited AGES for a new Kay Woodward book. I thoroughly enjoyed her teen debut, Jane Airhead, and Wuthering Hearts was well worth the wait. It's a fast, fun, romantic read with humorous characters and one or two embarrassing situations. Oh, to be a teenager again!

Set in the moors of Yorkshire, England, Wuthering Hearts follows the life of Emily. She's crushing on an attractive new boy, reading Wuthering Heights and trying to act it out in her school play. Sound like a recipe for disaster? It very nearly is!

I think Kay Woodward is one of the funniest British authors out there. Her writing is witty and her humour blunt, not to mention quite northern in this book. Being from up north myself, I appreciated the laughs and references. I think we need more books set outside London - I'm sure there are many stories to be told about the rest of the UK!

Wuthering Hearts is a charming book about romance, friendship and Cathy and Heathcliff. It's short and sweet, but by 'eck will it make you laugh. There's nothing like a deserted Yorkshire moor to inspire an angsty teenage love story, and that's exactly what you'll get here!

3.5/5

Cute fluffy read 19 July 2011
Format:Paperback
After reading a lot of YA, this cute fluffy book was the perfect next read for me. Although it's blatantly obvious it's aimed at younger readers, I still found it appealing and easily got lost in the story. Kay's writing fits the style of the book but it's not patronising or tries to act too young, like I've noticed with other books. There's plenty of humour and mix ups too, plus a brooding love interest to throw in to the mix. A particularly interesting thing for me was this book's setting West Yorkshire, in the UK. Why? Because I live there! This definitely helped me connect to the story easier.

Emily is your usual sort of teen girl - she lives with her father and her sister after her parents divorce and has ambitions to become an actress. She meets Robert for the first time when she's complaining about the choice of Wuthering Heights for the school play and develops a crush on him. She's desperate to become Cathy in the school play because acting's her thing but this quickly changes when she realises she wants to be Heathcliff's (Robert's) Cathy. She tries to be nice to Robert, thinking he needs cheering up but he always brushes her off or glares at her. Will she ever be able to be at least friends with him?

Shuffle along Jacqueline Wilson, this author knows what teens actually do these days. I thought the mentions of Facebook and Edward Cullen were quite fun and I think teens can easily relate to that. This book is perfect for teen girls and the young at heart, where you can follow Emily as she deals with her first crush and discovering love for the first time. Emily has a tendency to say the wrong thing at the wrong time and it was a little nerve wracking wondering if she would get with Robert, who kept getting more annoyed with her everytime she did something a little silly.
