More About the Author

Stacia Kane has been a phone psychic, a customer service representative, a bartender, and a movie theatre usher. Writing is more fun than all of them combined. She wears a lot of black, still makes great cocktails, likes to play music loud in the car, and thinks Die Hard is one of the greatest movies ever made. She believes in dragons and the divine right of kings, and is a fervent Ricardian. After almost four years living in England, she's currently outside Atlanta with her husband and their two little girls planning a return as soon as possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gah, be still my Terrible heart! 4 Sep 2013

Rating: 5 stars

Gah, be still my Terrible heart. If you thought you had it bad for Terrible before reading Wrong Ways Down, the new Downside novella set between Unholy Ghosts and Unholy Magic, prepare to swoon on a whole new level.

Told from Terrible's point of view, we join him as he investigates what appears to be the ritualistic murder of one of Bump's men and the possibility of dark magic on the streets. We get to see what makes Terrible tick, and I found it fascinating.

Like with all the Downside books it took me awhile to fall back into the thick slang. Truth be told a little longer as Terrible thinks this way, too. That being said, I love how committed the writing is to it, helping you feel totally immersed in this dark and gritty world.

Terrible is the right-hand man of a drug kingpin. He beats people, oversees drug sales and prostitutes... But in the post-Truth world nearly everyone is doing something immoral to survive, particularly in Downside. While he enjoys what he does, we learn that it's so much more to him than a job. Through his past we see how lonely he was before Bump, why he considers him and the other Downsiders his family. When a prostitute is raped the fierce protective streak Terrible feels for those under his care shines through. He embodies the shades of grey that make up this world.

As he works the various junkies and cutpurses that owe money for information on the crimes, it becomes clear just how intelligent Terrible is--fitting pieces together, strategizing. What was heartbreaking was seeing just how little he thought of himself.

There is a sense he wants to be more. More for Chess and more for his daughter.

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't love this series anymore 19 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I couldn't love this series or Terrible anymore than I already do. If you haven't started this series, you so should. It's a great Urban Fantasy series that combines ghosts, mystery and romance and it is AMAZING.

So in this we see it from Terrible's POV as he tries to track down who's been attacking prostitutes in Downside. It was interesting seeing how Terrible worked and the relationship between him and Bump.

We see bits of him with Chess and how, even so early on in the series, he wants to spend time with her and get to know her better. It's kinda sweet really, and just another reason why I love Terrible. Okay, so he's not the greatest looking guy but he has such a great heart underneath.

I'm eagerly awaiting book 6 in the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars novella fitting between books 1 and 2 in series 11 Sep 2013

From Terrible's point of view, fills in some of his experiences separate from Chess. Explicit descriptions of violence might be upsetting although they give more substance and complexity to Chess's and Terrible's relationship throughout the books. I'm not sure I would have got so much out of this short book if I hadn't already read the first two books - partly because the Downside dialect is used a lot, more than in the novels.
Stacia Kane's writing is so good - the Downside dystopia is recognisable as a development from the contemporary world whilst being terrifyingly and shockingly unthinkable. Paranormal elements from witchcraft and fundamentalist religion are woven into a tumultuous romance between two emotionally-damaged but tough and appealing characters. This novella is well up to the usual standard of character development, plot and writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars At last! A whole novella of Terrible! 8 Aug 2014
By ClareR
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is one long novella - and well worth whatever you pay for it! There's nothing like a good dose of Terrible, and this certainly delivers on that score. I just love the language that Terrible uses, the Downside dialect. It can take a couple of pages to get into it, but once you're there, it's like a full immersion programme!
