Simon Kernick's short story becomes a living hell for two couples on a getaway break from their usual routine of work and play into the 'middle of nowhere' in a Scottish lodge. A chance encounter with a naked runaway has dire consequences for all. This is a genuinely fast, chilling and frightening account of the fate befalling the innocent parties involved. Neat twist at the end. Only gripe is it ended when it did. Excellent addition to the Quick Read line and the author's writings.

This is a short and gripping read about two couples on a walking holiday in Scotland. The story follows the horrific events that occur after they come across a terrified girl and try to help her.
This is a fast paced thriller and the tension turns up a notch with every page.
Thoroughly enjoyable and very satisfying read.

I am very disappointed in the Author, he usually gives you value for money. This feels as though he was asked to put together 2000 words, this he did without giving any thought to the ending. Next time don't bother for your future readers sake.

I just came across this book at our local library, having read quite a few of the Quick Reads before thought it wild be worth getting out.

A good story that even though it was a quick read (in little under two hours). Still an enjoyable and fast paced one.

For the cost of a magazine but a lot more substance. Well worth looking at the Quick Reads.

You get to know a little about the four characters that are going on the trip, but that is all you need to know. Not all that much background as their story takes place from their arrival. As said a fast paced and at times a little scary one and the ending I only realised who was who and the baddies, so to speak after I had finished it.

No fluff and romance more a cold hearted read.

i am a fan of Simon Kernick and i could not give high enough praise for his last book seige but this one started of promising, but went down hill from there and endings that left you wondering why you bothered to read the book in the first place,

I have enjoyed some of Simon Kernicks novels so thought I'd try one of his short stories.
It's not his best but I enjoyed it for a quick read....easily read in about an hour or less. I will not spoil the ending but it was not what I expected, although I'd anticipated the final twist.
What is good about this story is the pace....the dialogue and plot pull the reader forward to continue reading and find out what happens next. I was disappointed with one part of the tale which was way too predictable but I will say no more.
All in all an enjoyable, ruthless and violent tale which entertained me.....which is why I read...well done.
