4.0 out of 5 stars An extremely useful and informative source., 6 Oct 2003
The work of Luke Timothy Johnson is well articulated, organised, easily understandable and a great joy to read. Inevitably, 'The Writings of the New Testament' is no exception. It provides a very helpful and comprehensive insight into the writings of the New Testament, and is an essential study aid for those seeking a deeper understanding of them. I advise you to purchase this product if you have a passion and zeal for the subject, and I assure you that it will invoke one in you if you do not! This book is enjoyable and inspiring, and it successfully illuminates the core teachings and philosophies of the New Testament.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the financial outlay, especially with the CD-ROM, 10 Jun 2006
By Chris Of The OT (South West of England) - See all my reviews
I echo the reviewer below: Luke Timothy Johnson has produced `a very helpful and comprehensive insight into the writings of the New Testament...' He has managed to cover all the NT writings thoroughly and still gives enough space to crucial background material.

`Writings...' is divided into six major sections (not including `Introductions', `Appendices', etc.):

Part One: The Symbolic World of the NT
Part Two: The Christian Experience
Part Three: The Synoptic Tradition
Part Four: Pauline Traditions
Part Five: Other Canonical Witnesses [i.e. Hebrews, etc.]
Part Six: Johannine Traditions

In his initial twenty page introduction, LTJ explains his approach to NT study which focuses on the 'symbolic world' of the NT - literal symbols, figurative, imaginative, etc. - to illuminate the NT world for us. It is an interesting and original approach which I enjoyed. Although this emphasises that this is a book best suited for more academic or structured Bible study (I am studying a correspondence course with the London School of Theology), it would still be a great benefit for all levels of study. Though it's not as accessible as some - like John Drane's excellent 'Introducing the New Testament' - it is a much more comprehensive volume and a very rewarding read.

I have given `Writings...' five stars because the Revised Edition comes with the whole (enormous) book on CD, which is compatible with the Libronix Digital Library System (LDLS), which the Logos Bible study software uses. It's the most amazingly powerful and useful aid to studying printed text that I have ever used! That LTJ has included this on a CD inside is priceless. Though this title is expensive, it's worth it just to read LTJ's interpretations, but the CD makes it irresistible. I warmly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to the New Testament, 13 Mar 2009

(REAL NAME)
This is a good book for people who are new to the New Testament writings. It gives a good, accurate commentary of the books and some interesting background information about the sociological situation at the time. The bibliography is also very good.
