Bobby Sands was twenty-seven years old and had been on hunger strike for sixty-six days when he died on 5 May 1981. The young IRA volunteer was world-famous by the time of his death, having spent the last nine years of his short life in prison and been elected, while still a prisoner, to the British parliament. The hunger strike was aimed at rebutting the British governments attempts to criminalise the struggle for Irish freedom by changing Sands and his fellow cellmates status from political to criminal. While behind bars, Sands secretly wrote on toilet paper and cigarette papers with the refill of a cheap pen that he kept hidden inside his body. These writings were then smuggled out of the prison. With dry humour, they chart a mans attempt to preserve his identity against appalling beatings, unimaginable filth, freezing cold and numbing boredom. In poetry and prose, he vividly evokes the enclosed hell of Long Kesh, the harassment and the humiliatingly invasive searches. A great book and a helpful insight to a man that carries with him so much misunderstanding and myth.
Sands was convicted of an attepmted commercial bombing (i.e. bombing of an empty business property in a fight against capitalism and british emperialism in Ireland).
He was never convicted of murder. So, no, he was not a murderer.
Nor was he a terrorist thug. He was a young, brave and galant man who gave his life that the struggle for Irish freedom be continued despite the British attempts to demoise and criminalise the revolutionaries.

Decent book, a wee bit repetitive

I think Bobby Sands was a very interesting person and decent writer, especially considering that he had no formal education to speak of. He shows a veriety of writing styles, prose and poetry. However, I think he becomes incredibly repditive! I understand that this is all he has to write about, but I think he obsesses over certain issues and becomes rather self-indulges on hiss own suffering. He seems to leave out many things, such as what the "screws" would taunt them with, perhaps this was because they would say how the IRA killed innocent people! He also leaves out the fact that he abondoned his own child and wife, though she divirced him because of his decision to hold the IRA above his own family. I admire his endurance and unwavering belief in hos cause, something which too many people lack today. Conviction!
