Review

'Gillie Bolton, Victoria Field and Kate Thompson are doing remarkable, deeply meaningful work - with eloquence and compassion. They encourage writing to help heal spirits and minds. I salute their clarity and conviction - we need their wisdom in this world.' --Naomi Shihab Nye Poet, Editor and Educator, Texas

Product Description

The use of creative writing as a route to personal development is a powerful therapeutic tool - a fact that is recognized in the growing numbers of workshops and writing groups within professional contexts, including clinical, health and criminal justice settings.

Writing Works is a guide for writers or therapists working with groups or individuals and is full of practical advice on everything from the equipment needed to run a session to ideas for themes, all backed up by the theory that underpins the methods explained. Experienced practitioners in the field contribute detailed illuminating accounts of organizing writing workshops for a wide range of different clients, together with examples of their outcomes.

This book will be an invaluable start-up reference for arts therapists and professionals working across the health, social care and caring professions, and one that will be referred to again and again.

writing in healthcare 31 Mar 2011

An essential book, for those who wish to help heal sufferers from past trauma, betrayal and health issues. It provides both help to individuals, on their own healing path and also information on starting your own writing circle.

Writing poetry 16 Jan 2009
By Dr. John Laughlin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was a dissapointing book for me as I was looking for good journal reference, but all their examples are taken from poetry. It is out of balance in that way and should state in the title that all the exercises involve poetry.

I am facilitating a writing workshop using personal narrative to explore what gives our lives meaning and this book has been invaluable to me. It is written with compassion and insight and is full of practical ideas and resources to explore. I know I will refer to it again and again.

Great resource 23 Mar 2012
By Eileen McKee - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm an art therapist working with adults in a drug and alcohol rehab center. I've started incorporating journal exercises and creative writing topics into my visual art groups, and this book has been an excellent resource in getting started. Clear and specific directives with examples, and the contributors are from a wide range of settings, both clinical and nonclinical. Definitely would recommend.

It is often in the reading back that the most intense part of the session occurs - being truly listened to is a rare experience for many of us and to be listened to attentively and respectfully can be very empowering. "e;

It is not the form that matters, but rather the process and act of writing and the content, and the impact of that content on the writer "e;

I want to facilitate a collective moment where everyone feels an absolute sense of belonging and connection to one another and knows, absolutely, that the moment could not have happened without each one of them being present and participating. "e;
