There is a lot of the practicalities associated with video game writing discussed throughout, and although I personally am a fan of Steve Ince's 'pseudo-code' (a mix of C-style coding and branching with character dialogue interspersed throughout), I can see how this approach won't appeal to everyone. Aimed probably more at the practising or professional writer, ultimately this book comes up short if, like me, you're looking for more advice and tips (as a beginner) on how to get started or 'pitch' for work, and thus ultimately proved disappointing.

This book offers an interesting approach to video games writing if you come from the background of a professional writer with no idea whatsoever about video games. If you already know about video games and want to know more about the role of the writer or how to write a good game, you'll find very few useful pages here, as a lot of paper goes about the basics of playing a game. The writing is interesting, but very superficial and with just a couple of examples from actual games.

A good, straightforward, informative book that arrived in time. Lots of useful anecdotal evidence rather than scholarly research which I found added well to the mix of material I have used.

About the business not the craft 29 July 2008
By Joao Miguel Oliveira - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
There is one sentence toward the end of the book that I think sums up the whole book: "If this book has succeeded in its intention, you should now be in the position of understanding how a skilful writer fits within the game development process."

In fact, that's what this book is all about - each chapter analyses one aspect of the writer's work within the game development business. What this book won't tell you is how to improve your work how the work actually is done, but it does tell valuable information about how it fits in the grand-scheme of game development with an emphasis of interaction between the writer and the rest of the team.

If you are an indie and don't plan on ever becoming a professional game writer this book won't help you. It won't help you either if you are looking for techniques on writing for games. However, it is invaluable for people in the business or who plan entering it, covering even ways to promote yourself and your work.

I was unsure about rating it 3 or 4 stars, because other books do manage to cover both the business and the craft. But the emphasis on interaction and the depth of what it does cover are favorable, and I decided upon 4 stars.

Brilliant. Insightful. Covers everything you want to know. A well written and easy to understand guide for any 'wannabe' games developer.

A wonderful resource for anyone looking to get into games. There are not enough of these books, so thank you Steve for putting on out.
