Product Description

Review

"The author and publishers can be congratulated on an excellent work; if I were teaching a class on writing systems now, this would be my first choice as a textbook." ––William Bright, review in Written Language and Literacy "This is an excellent comprehensive textbook for university courses on writing systems (grammatology), with enough preliminary remarks of a theoretical nature to enable the student to master the scripts from around the world, including cuneiform of various types, Semitic, Greek, Roman, etc. It is written in a clear style with a very good glossary and up–to–date bibliography." ––Alan S. Kaye, California State University, Fullerton

5.0 out of 5 stars A pleasure to read. 12 Sep 2012

A brilliant book that is well-written, well thought-out, and clear and concise. There is a clear separation of theory about writing systems, and the discussion of the writing systems themselves - VERY easy to take notes from, very clear explanations, not too wordy, and clear terminology throughout. A model of how linguistics texts should be written. The one small thing I would say is a lot of the first chapter is repeated in the last for some reason, and some theoretical terms are not introduced in the "theory" chapter, but in the chapters on specific writing systems.

However, an excellent text that will hopefully address the spoken-language hegemony in the current field! I'm still waiting for the day when we have graphetics and graphemics modules on bachelor courses :)

Practically everything you ever wanted to know about writing systems from a linguistic perspective is in this book. Pick a language; it's in there. I originally purchased this book for its coverage of Chinese script, but you'll get everything from Linear B to Cherokee.
