Product Description

Product Description

The book shows that advanced writing skills are best learnt from studying the prose styles and techniques of already established writers, and that any judgement about the quality of writing must take into account the use to which it is put and the audience for whom it is intended.

From the Back Cover

Writing with Style is a practical book designed to be used by writers of all kinds who want to reflect on the craft of prose writing in order to develop their own writing skills. It effectively provides an advanced prose writing course for native speakers.
Working from the position that language is a craft that can be mastered with practice, this book shows that advanced writing skills are best learned from studying the prose styles and techniques of already established writers, and that any judgement about the quality of writing must take into account the use to which it is put and the audience for whom it is intended.
Through the study of extracts and engaging practical activities, the authors reveal the many practical, small-scale changes that a writer can make to a text in order to achieve certain effects. Examples in the book are drawn from a range of different contexts, cultures and historical periods and include business English, letters, journalism, comedy writing, and instruction manuals as well as the prose of literary texts.
Writing with Style and the three other books in the Speak-Write Series, Grammar and Writing, Speaking Your Mind, and Making Your Case, are the result of three years of research, teaching, design and development undertaken by the nationally-acclaimed Speak-Write Project. This project, funded by HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council in England) through its Fund for the Development of Teaching and Learning, was established to provide groundbreaking teaching materials to advance the speaking, writing and grammatical skills of first-year humanities undergraduates.
Rebecca Stott, Anna Snaith and Simon Featherstone are Lecturers in the Department of English, Anglia Polytechnic University. Simon Avery is a Lecturer in Literature at the University of Hertfordshire and Dominic Rowland wrote his doctoral thesis on T.S. Eliot at University College London.
