Product Description

Review

'One of the most accessible – and yet comprehensive – books on screenwriting that I have ever read. The book manages to be instructive without being academic, entertaining without resorting to entertainment, and pragmatic without being anecdotal. The result is a fully-dimensional approach to both the craft and the business of screenwriting that surpasses other, more singular-minded works – truly a revelation for neophyte writers and a useful brush-up tool for seasoned pros as well' - David Kukoff, Northwestern University, US

Product Description

This fresh approach to scriptwriting, innovative in style and approach, incorporates both creativity and critical appraisal as essential methods in writing for the screen. Contemporary case studies, in-depth analyses and interactive exercises create a wealth of ideas for those wishing to work in the industry or deepen their study of the practice.

This book provides a great overview of the screenwriting process; academic but not dreary and offering up new insights to the art of screenwriting. I would definitely recommend one or two read-throughs as the book, although not a massively thick tome, provides a refreshing change from the many self-help books flooding the marketplace and it throws up many unexpected ideas and insights. It certainly isn't in the "write an Oscar winner in 10 minutes" category nor is it prescriptive about structure etc, encouraging the writer to find her own path. Let's face it, writing is hard and this book doesn't pretend that it is anything else but whilst you are chipping away at the rock face this is probably the handiest implement that you will find in the toolbox. A great book. Highly recommended.

These guys know their stuff! And this book is a very good read too, never over-complicated though written with intellectual vigour and depth. They understand the film business and how writers approach their work. Recommended!

This book offers a different incite to the creative aspects the screenwriter's job. Instead of repeating what most writers already know, it builds on common understanding and draws references from major screenwriting books without excluding the new comer. At first glance I was relieved it wasn't my first book on the subject and I felt several years of writing experience helped me to dissect to content. Now, in hindsight I wish it had been my first book as it might have made me a more creative writer, less constrained by overused story patterns.

A great tool for the serious writer. Contains excellent exercises worth revisiting again and again.
