This review is from: Writing in the Sand (Hardcover)
Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen has photographed beaches in England over the course of many years. The result is this book, called "Writing in the sand".
Konttinen has obviously spent a lot of time strolling the beaches looking for shots, and she has a wonderfully quirky and warm way of portraying the beachgoers and sometimes whatever they leave behind.
I had not heard of this book, nor its author until a colleague recommended it (I am a photojournalist), but I am very glad that I took him up on his word and bought this book unseen.
To me, Konttinens work is reminiscent of Erwitt, and Cartier-Bresson in his early days, which just so happens to be my favorite photographers. She portrays witty and funny scenes without riduculing - never too close so that it becomes speculative. We get the feeling of strolling around the beach and witnessing the situations just like Konttinen did.
The only reason I am not giving this book five stars is that the editing is not as tight as I would like it. A few places in the book she has included medium-format pictures of the beach, sand and seakelp etc. The rest of the book is shot with a regular 35mm camera. The medium format work is in my opinion not good enough as fine-art work, and serves only to distract from the scenes elsewhere in the book as they break up the narrative style. I would much rather have seen more pictures of beach scenes, or a whole book just with fine-art work.
Either way, this book is a worthwile investment, and sure to be quite sought after once its out of print.
