Lifesaver! 7 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
I had no idea how to even begin to write my personal statement, so I made the choice to buy this book and I couldn't have been more pleased with it. The activities it gets you to do are simple yet so eye-opening. You find yourself referring to the format plan and the questions for inspiration on what to write. It tells you what each paragraph should include. It even tells you the most important things - what NOT to write! I gave my first draft in, and my tutor came back to me to say that it was superb and that nothing needed altering. I attribute a large part of that success to the help and ideas this book provided me with.

Even if you think you will be fine with your personal statement, give this a go. It will improve it, for sure.

I am a careers advisor at a school and purchased this on an Amazon recommendation after ordering a related text. I have to say I'm very disappointed with it as it doesn't tell me anything I don't know. Much of it seems a bit trite and wouldn't be much use to those students who are aiming high for the top universities. It would be useful to a student and their parents if little support and guidance is available at their school/college - it will get you on the right track to producing a basic and competent personal statement; to be fair, I suspect this is its target market. If you are trying to get into the most competitive institutions and courses, you are going to have to write with a lot more flair and focus and there are other resources that will be much more useful to you.

I was very impressed with this book. It really does feel like you're in a coaching session, sitting down with the author, especially the way it has been written. The exercises within each step are just what I needed to get my mind thinking about the things I wanted to write. As a poet I am hoping to apply to do a creative writing degree and as I'm a mature student, I have very little support, so this book is just what I was looking for to help me.
