Fantasy and Science Fiction are popular genres, especially with the success of the Harry Potter books and writers such as Tolkien, Stephen King, Ursula LeGuin, and Arthur C. Clarke. Lisa Tuttle begins by looking at the many different kinds of novels covered by these genres. The book then moves on to look at ideas, world-building, language, structure, short stories, writing for children and finding an agent. The book examines the co-authoring process and contains examples of correspondence between authors, charting the development of a story. It also provides authors with a real insight into how publishers work and contains illuminating interviews with editors.
About the Author
Lisa Tuttle taught a science fiction course at the City Lit College, part of London University, and has tutored on the Arvon courses. She was residential tutor at the Clarion SF writing workshop in Seattle, USA. She has published six novels and two short story collections. Many of her books have been translated into French & German editions. Her first book Windhaven - co-authored with George R. R. Martin - is due to be re-released by Orion in 2001.

I bought this book as I want to concentrate on writing Sci-Fi. I have read a couple of books on writing general fiction (which were Ok but were pretty much the same) and taken an evening class on short story writing before this. The evening class was very good.
The author of this book starts by explaining the difference between Sci-Fi and Fantasy which, although logical, gives an idea of what level of writer this book is aimed at. Different aspects of writing (plot, character, style, etc.) are then discussed in sequence but none of it is anything new if you have already read a general writing book or attended an evening class.
To make matters worse the author shamelessly plugs her own work. If you want to give good examples of Sci-Fi surely you would quote Asimov, Dick, etc., not Tuttle?
This is the first time I have ever felt the urge to write a review on Amazon. Unless you are completely new to writing and have never read any Sci-fi/Fantasy then steer clear.
I feel like I have learnt nothing from this book and every single penny of the £11.99 it cost me was a complete waste. The self-plugging by the author just added insult to injury.
AVOID.

The emphasis is away from so called " hard " sf and more towards what I call more imaginative or " impossible" fantasy writing. The book has been updated to include recent developments such as writing for the internet and includes more recent writers such as J.K. Rowling.

Not bad for the price...

I purchased this book on the recommendation of George R. R. Martin.
I thoroughly enjoyed his Song of Ice and Fire series (so far) and the author of this book is a former student of his, so I thought it was going to be golden.
My expectations were somewhat lofty.
The bottom line: if you want some good hints and general information, get this book. It has plenty for the price Amazon is asking.
Don't expect this book to make you a top-notch writer though. No book can. As a previous reviewer stated: practice, practice, practice.

This book won't make you a great writer

This book is far to general and abstract to make you a great writer. Something I liked about the book was the examples of how different writers used specific "devices" in their writing. I also liked the Q&A with publishers at the end.
Sadly though, the bulk of the book can be summarized as:
Read a lot to keep up with the field and
Write a lot to get practice.
