5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference book 13 Sep 2010

I bought this book in order to improve on the written critique I provide to people in my writing groups. There are tips on how to find a writing group, but since I've got one - and belong to a lovely online forum- I was more interested in the practical exercises.

Love that the book's really straightforward. I think it's helped me focus the critique I provide to other writers; rather than dotting some random thoughts throughout their work (not that I've stopped doing that too!). I especially like that the author provides a written excerpt for consideration. She then picks certain parts of the excerpt to comment on plot holes, character issues (underdevelopment or inconsistencies). authour also looks at providing critique descriptions; dialogue, scene structure, POV (point of view) and Voice.

My reasons for buying the book were primarily to get my points across consistently well and diplomatically. I think this book ticks the boxes in this respect. The bonus for me is the section on how to self-edit once you've received a critique. Really helpful.

If you're looking for tips on critiquing a specific genre you will also find information that moves beyond fiction for adults, young adults and middle grade readers. The author has separate sections for critiquing non-fiction and children's books.

Usually self-help books on writing take me away from writing, or sit on my bookshelf unopened. This book is already sitting next to my PC so I can refer to it each time I open a new attachment to critique. I'm hoping that over time I'll pick up on the issues she reminds a writer to look out for in their own and the work of others.

My only negative comment is that this great content is published in a relatively small font.

Highly recommended.

Feedback is something all writers need, yet it is not an easy matter to find the kind that will really help your writing.

This book helps navigate the maze for you. There are sections on what a crit group is for, how to find one that suits you, possible pitfalls and obligations for being a member. Online options are also discussed, so this is bang up to date.

So once you've found your group, whether online or in the coffee shop, what do you do? How do you give useful feedback, and what might be said when your own work is in the spotlight? There are general pointers on what to look for in a manuscript, with well chosen examples. I'm a fiction writer, journalist and freelance editor myself and I thought these chapters covered exactly what a writer needs to know to improve their work in progress. There are worksheets too, for easy reference.

Ms Levine goes on to examine key issues for different genres of book - picture books, adult novels, non-fiction, memoir - and even magazine articles.

Even if you're unsure about whether to join a group or not, this book will sharpen your critical faculties and allow you to make giant strides when assessing your own work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ideal writers companion 1 Jun 2010

Whilst some would say that the sheer volume of reading that I do is to big to count, I tend to utilise it as a lot of research to learn what not only works within the writing world for me, but also to learn what I didn't like and thus learn lessons from within. Currently I'm going to be looking into creating some basic tales to learn the background but in order to grow as a writer you have to not only submit pieces but learn how to take critism without turning into the Incredible Hulk. (A lesson that a number of established authors are still learning the hard way.)

What this book will do is help you to find the right (or perhaps write) group for you to submit pieces to, how to critique others pieces and how to take what they've got to say about your own. It's a minefield out there so its always a tricky ground to walk. This book is really an invaluable guide to a newbie as well as one that will help others to learn how to improve some of their already established skills and has something for every writer within. A good title and one that will invariably have the reader flicking from time and again into its pages for a touch of inspiration or to relearn the odd lesson.
