5.0 out of 5 stars Useful, informative, humorous, encouraging, 29 Dec 1998
By A Customer
A clear and concise summary of what you need to know, 'Writing for Children: And Getting Published', treads the fine line between realism and encouragement. The book gives exercises which make the potential author think and work! In particular the book emphasizes the need for reasearch but also unlike some of the 'writing guides' also emphasizes the need for inspiration and the desire to tell stories. An excellent choice for general advice and guidance.

5.0 out of 5 stars A one-stop shop, 17 Mar 2009
I'd already finished my manuscript by the time I picked this up in a second-hand bookshop, so I can't comment on the writing exercises. Nevertheless, it's been invaluable as a guide on how to format my work and submit it to agencies.

The first half of the book covers planning your writing and how to approach it in a professional manner. It covers the markets (fiction, non-fiction and illustration), details like reading age, and how to progress from a first draft to submission and dealing with acceptance or rejection.

This book has an excellent layout (as you'd hope!) - it's very easy to skim through and pick out the topics you need, which are clearly explained yet sufficiently detailed. Best of all, it's peppered with advice from publishers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!, 11 Dec 2001
By Grace Patterson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Teach Yourself Writing for Children and Getting Published (Teach Yourself (McGraw-Hill)) (Paperback)
I had purchased a variety of children's books to polish my craft, and this one seemed to really stand out above the rest. I am an amateur writer, but I hope to be a professional someday. This book really helped me to put things into perspective about the nature of writers, the do's and dont's of writing, and many helpful tips to keep in mind. I've read it through three times and I'm still not bored with it. The author is very down-to-earth and easy to understand. I rate this book one of the best!
