Essential if you're serious about writing, 19 Oct 2005
This review is from: Writers' and Artists' Yearbook 2006 (Paperback)
If you're in any way serious about writing and live in the British Isles, there are two books you need to buy every year - "Writers' and Artists' Yearbook" and "The Writer's Handbook". The questions you'll be asking now are Why? and what does he mean by "serious about writing"?
People start writing for a variety of reasons - fun, love, therapy. It's a progressive illness. At some stage, you decide you'd like to improve your skills ... or come to the conclusion that other people might benefit from hearing your words! You join a writers' group, take classes, or start sending your poems, short stories, manuscripts, or articles to publishers. It's before this stage you have to get serious. If you want to improve your writing and have at least the ambition to get published, then I'd suggest you invest in the "Writers' and Artists' Yearbook" and learn a little about marketing before you start sending out material on spec.
The "Yearbook" contains a generous helping of useful articles which might just stimulate you and inspire you with the confidence to share your writings with others. If you're serious enough to believe that you'd like to push your writing to the ultimate conclusion and try to earn money (if not a living) from it, then you will need both books.
If you were to compare the two, "Writers' and Artists' Yearbook" is probably the better value. Both contain page after page of addresses - UK newspapers and magazines, publishers, agents, competitions, etc., etc., etc., complete with pen portraits of these. Both books offer a number of articles on the subject of writing and publication. In general, the "Yearbook" is slightly better.
The 2006 edition opens with an inspirational introduction by Terry Pratchett - it's always worth hearing from successful writers about their earliest experiences and approaches to their work, it gives you a sense of the success you'd like to achieve and an appreciation of the work you need to put in to your craft.
The "Yearbook" offers short guides on getting started, how to submit a manuscript or approach an editor, the basics of copyright, libel, tax and social security, and advice on websites, e-publishing, and much, much more. There's also a handy little guide to proof reading and correcting. The basics are here - use them as your starting point.
When it comes to listings of publications and publishers, the "Writers' and Artists' Yearbook" and "The Writer's Handbook" do not entirely overlap - they have a number of different listings, they offer a different perspective, and it is worth having both on your bookshelf - and if you want to break in to American markets, you should also consider "Writer's Market". In some respects, you may find the listings in "The Handbook" more informative, but that can be a matter of opinion.
The "Yearbook" is well laid out. It's been going for years, so they should have got it right by now. The material is concise, easily digested, and in the last nine years I've failed to find a mistake in any of the copies I've bought. For an annual publication, its information is accurate, timely, and accessible. If you're serious about writing, it will become a good friend, to be cherished and handled with due care.

Now ask yourself that question!, 16 Aug 2006
This review is from: Writers' and Artists' Yearbook 2006 (Paperback)
Ignore any disparaging comments about this product because no book could possibly include every single element, nuance and minor detail about all aspects of publishing. Just read this review and `THEN' ask yourself a simple question;
Can I afford to be without a copy of this book?
I am not an educated man and, when I sat down to write my first book in 1985, people laughed. I was serving in the army at the time and when the work was published, one fairly senior officer actually said to me "By what right do you seek to write a book about Scuba Diving?" Whilst my response remains unprintable, I can now report that my articles have been published all over the world, my 3rd book sold over 30,000 copies and my 4th was voted "Underwater Publication of the Year!" My point being; If the drive to write is strong enough, not only will you write - but you SHOULD write in spite of whatever opposition you encounter.
Whether you buy a copy or not, all aspiring writers need to appreciate the value of this product. It is not just a collection of addresses for various book publishers and magazine editors. Instead, it contains almost everything you might need to know when contemplating writing for very different categories such as; Newspapers, Magazines, Books, Poetry, TV, Film, Radio and Theatre. The advice given and lists of outlets in each of those areas is then followed by sections on; Literary Agents, Art & Illustration, Societies, Prizes and Festivals, Online, Resources, Copyright & Libel and Finance.
This is not just a book of addresses. It also contains helpful advice, explanations, getting started and simply explains many elements of the publishing world. If, like me, you write books aimed at the scuba diver, there is no point in submitting your work to a publisher who concentrates solely on, say, ancient architecture. You get the point (and you save a lot of time and postage!).
Nobody in the world knows all there is to know about the complicated subject of publishing. This book, however, will give the writer the widest possible appreciation. Had I been in possession of a copy in 1985, my own road ahead would have been so much smoother - really!
Now ask yourself that question!
And good luck.

Very informative - a must for writers of any kind, 23 Feb 2008
This review is from: Writers' and Artists' Yearbook 2006 (Paperback)

I don't write as much as i used to nowadays but i remember how interesting this book was. The bulk of it is full of the contact details of agents of publishers which are obviously essential if you are thinking of taking your writing to the next level and try and get published.
However, i nice little extra is the anecdotes and helpful advice dotted throughout the book from people in the business. All are very insightful and inspiring to people interested in the world of writing. The book is a tad pricey but if you're really into writing i think it's probably worth it - there's so many 'how to write' guides out there it's nice to have this one that isn't in any way pretentious and has a far higher quality of material in it and a more official air about it. Get it early and refer to it often.
