4.0 out of 5 stars Good motivation guide 6 Jan. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A good motivational guide with a few helpful tips, but nothing really specific to writing. Could be a book about finding time for any hobby or part-time business.

2.0 out of 5 stars Happy clappy self help nonsense 6 Mar. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I finished this book in two hours and that's two hours I won't ever get back. The advice is focused heavily on tips such as repeatedly, insistently advising that you stop drinking caffeinated drinks (it's apparently not natural and compared to unleashing wrecking balls in your system... he's clearly been drinking better stuff than I), eating nuts, exercising, thinking really really positively, buying a LOT of self help tapes and books, abandoning your friends and family and getting just 6 hours sleep a night. The latter would kill me off far more thoroughly than surrendering my java. My favourite bit of all, once he'd finished rehashing "The Secret", was the part when he started saying something about how you ought to drink lots of water, particularly the water affected by happy emotions (it remembers, you know) which is far healthier than the water affected by unhappy emotions. I'd have laughed but by this point I was just too depressed. You'll be glad to know I wasn't near a tap.

Not entirely sure what I expected from a book which could only tell me I needed to make more time for my writing and that something else would have to go, but most definitely, I did not expect this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some Worthwhile Tips 26 Oct. 2011
By K.M. Weiland, Author of Historical and Speculative Fiction - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Subtitled "How to Write Your Book Around Your 9 to 5 Job," this booklet provides a fast read packed with easily grasped and implemented life-management tips. Most of us only dream of making writing our primary livelihood. For the majority of writers, our writing is something we're forced to squeeze into odd hours when real life isn't making its incessant demands. And, for most of us, this is a major challenge. How are we supposed to find enough time to write, edit, and market our work when the vast majority of our day is taken up with such necessities as earning our daily bread, eating our daily bread, and generally cleaning up after our daily bread?

As someone who's been there, done that, Bryan Cohen offers tips that apply as much to living a organized and fulfilled life in general as they do to living a productive writing life. He opened with a chapter sketching his own journey and growth from a writer who wasn't writing because he didn't think he had time, into an author who disciplined himself to become both efficient and prolific. He then divides the standard work day into morning, afternoon, and evening chapters and further breaks them down into schedules and tips. Some of his suggestions are the generic sort we've all heard (get up early, prioritize your tasks, etc.), some are geared toward helping writers reach their peak of creativity by maintaining a physically and emotionally healthy lifestyle, and some are suggestions for optimizing creativity while actually writing.

The author's friendly, self-deprecating style makes this a fun and encouraging read. You won't find anything earth shatteringly new in these pages, but you will find an accessible list of tips and tricks to keep you focused, fulfilled, and, most importantly, writing.
4.0 out of 5 stars Shows you how to carve out time when you don't have any 6 Mar. 2015
By Monica R. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Some good tips, many not new to me. But to some, many of these ideas may be revolutionary. Nice breakdown of the workday and the weekend for how to carve out time in your day. I like that he pays attention to more than just the writing. Writers are whole people, and the rest of their lives needs attention if they're going to be successful. Otherwise, those things you try to ignore will just keep getting in the way.
3.0 out of 5 stars A good book for beginning writers 21 Aug. 2014
By Shirley Rivers - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Good information for anyone thinking about writing part-time. There really isn't much that can be said about this subject that hasn't been said before, so it's all in the presentation. I would recommend this book for beginning writers, but not so much for experienced writers, who already know the reality of trying to find time to write.

4.0 out of 5 stars Find the time to work on your dreams 11 Aug. 2011
By Linda Dessau - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
So many of us are struggling these days with the issue of not having enough time. In Writer on the Side: How to Write Your Book Around Your 9 to 5 Job, Bryan Cohen has put together a wide variety of practical, fun and truly unique strategies to help anyone get more out of their day and find the time to work on their dreams.

This book is geared primarily for creative writers of fiction, but Bryan's insights apply just as well to those of us blogging for business.

On a personal note, I can say that this book woke something up in me that I didn't even know was asleep. It had been awhile since I'd written out my goals with pen and paper. When I did that using some of the suggestions in this book, I immediately felt revitalized in both my business and my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-have for writers 22 Jun. 2011
By George Angus - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Writer on the Side is not just another writing book admonishing you to just write every day and all will be well. Bryan has taken a systematic approach to scheduling your day around what needs to be done in order to write and to be a writer. In the introduction he pleads,

Please, please, please, try at least one of the things in this book. Hell, get a friend at work in a similar boat to do the same thing. Push each other to take some action. Whatever you need to do to get your motor running, make it so!

Pretty straightforward stuff. He wants you to succeed. The thing is, you can tell he means it. His advice is heartfelt and true. As you work through the 60 pages of this book, you may recognize a few tips that are fairly standard but I'll bet you find a lot more that are original in concept and delivery.

This writing book is not just about the writing. It's about a writing life. I think that all true writers want the writing life. What that means is probably different for each of us but Bryan puts the foundation in place that is necessary to support a beautiful structure. What that structure looks like is up to you.

Bryan's done a good job here and I encourage you to check his book out.
