I can certainly recommend this book to anyone wishing to write their life story or simply about a specific part of it. The ten step structure is excellent and outlined in such a way that it won't fail to inspire you to get writing. I particularly enjoyed reading the examples from some of the authors 'creative writing' students that are interspersed throughout the book. They add that extra concept that other books, of the same genre, often lack. You will also be surprised at the amount of hints and tips that Sophie King offers, to jog your memory and help you recall specific events in your life. I can only add that this is a must read for all you budding autobiographers.

This is a timely book given the increased interest in both family history and creative writing these days. Sophie King's book takes you by the hand and guides you through the steps of writing your life story, with simple sections that even a writing novice can follow with ease. There are some great triggers for remembering events from your life, and various methods for making the process fun and revealing (such as the Desert Island Discs method). The book finishes by looking at whether you want to write your life story for pleasure or profit, and assesses the options for either preference.

A comprehensive and straightforward read that you can dip in and out of.

Shopping in Harrods 24 Feb 2011
By JH
Format:Paperback
I went to Harrods to look for a special French Bread Flour and an electronic roll-up piano but ended up buying only Sophie King's book `How to Write Your Life Story in Ten Easy Steps' in the Waterstones there! I would normally have gone home and ordered it from Amazon at their reduced price but I found it so intriguing I wanted to read it that day. Her suggestions are sensible and straightforward and I wish I had read something like this before I started writing my memoir - I have only just begun to use some of the approaches she suggests. I didn't find many of her students' examples inspiring but they obviously pleased their families who wanted to hear more. If their intention was to write for their loved ones rather than for commercial publication they clearly achieved their goals. Maybe when I've finally finished my memoir I'll get her book `How to write your first novel' before I start on my masterpiece.
