I have taught memoir courses from this book, so examined most others in the field of writing one's own life story. This was the first, and I think, the best. Author makes the task manageable with "get started" topics that trigger memories, inspiring samples from her real-life writing classes, and helpful tips. Perfect if you have an elderly parent or grand- who should record his/her life for family archives...or if you want to do it yourself.

I had been thinking about writing about my life for some years, but I set very high standards for myself, and failed to measure up - so became discouraged and de-motivated.
Then I got hold of this book, and the very practical advice and instructions have encouraged me to start in earnest. It is easy to read and follow. Lois Daniel is a natural teacher, and a real motivator, and gives interesting examples written by some of her pupils, and drawn from her own experiences.
If you have the desire to leave a testament for your children and grandchildren, you will find this volume invaluable.
