Invaluable! 23 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
Linda James has written a book that will both inspire and offer practical advice to aspiring writers of short stories and refresh the approach of more experienced authors, alike. In language that is clear and always illustrated with well chosen examples, drawn from a wide variety of sources, she explains how to hook the reader and make it impossible for them to walk away before the plot concludes.
How to create believable characters, convincing dialogue, suspense, and an interesting twist in the plot are explained. The book also provides tips on more practical aspects of writing such as grammar, editing and marketing which are invaluable. From the wonderful cover design, to the inspiring `last words', it is already a well-thumbed addition to my bookshelves.

Inspiring 15 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
This is a superb 'how to' guide for short story writers and aspiring novelists. Linda M James argues convincingly that bland adverbs weaken writing (e.g. Fred walked quickly). Instead she recommends more inventive use of verbs (e.g. Fred bounded) which show the reader the state of mind for the character - though much better put in the book! I found the 'points of view' and 'suspense' chapters very worthwhile. Linda M James makes some excellent points around dialogue and making speech sound realistic ... though don't get caught eavesdropping to everyday conversations like she did! But the single greatest thing I took from this book was the moment I had an epiphany around characterisation: I just didn't know my own characters well enough. When I applied the techniques recommended by Linda M James, the characters in my stories really started coming to life ... it just makes writing so much more enjoyable.
