Product Description

Anyone who writes copy for a living eventually has to decide whether to go it alone (if they have not already done so). Based on the author s experience of running one of the most successful copywriting agencies in Europe, this book provides straight-talking, savvy advice on how to be a successful freelance copywriter. How do I make a living working for myself? What s the best way to find and retain clients? How much should I charge for my services? What are the pitfalls and how to you avoid them? How do I keep a work-life balance? These are just some of the key questions and issues tackled in this down-to-earth and practical book. It also includes interviews with, and advice from, other successful freelance copywriters.

Simply brilliant 19 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
Andy Maslen has done it again. I bought this book two months shy of becoming a freelance copywriter. And boy am I pleased I did. It doesn't teach you how to write copy or come up with copywriting ideas - it shows you how to set up and run your own freelance copywriting business. Jam packed with examples, case studies, exercises and wit, this book is ideal.

It teaches you the 'business side' to the 'money side' through to the 'finding clients and keeping them happy side'. What's more, it's beautifully laid out. For advice on selling yourself, there's an easy-to-find, detailed chapter dedicated to it... for advice on pricing your services, there's an easy-to-find, detailed chapter on it.

I particularly enjoyed the interviews with other freelance copywriters. This isn't just one man's story of how he did it - you get the thoughts and experiences of many freelance copywriters, and how they came to be successful - whatever job or industry they came from.

This book came out just last week. I devoured it in two night-time sittings as Andy Maslen and the panel of copywriters he interviews for the book answered every question I had after a year in the business. A laugh out loud, straight to the point brilliant read for any one starting up a copywriting or - I would argue - ANY freelance business.
I will be passing this on to my husband for his IT company as the marketing advice is invaluable.
A must read.

Thank you for sorting out the key issues of pricing, marketing and how to organise one's life so that at the end of the working day there's still time to get a life!

Excellent 18 Feb 2011
By Stephen
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is not a "how to write great copy..." manual (I believe that Andy Maslen has produced other books on that topic). It is, however, an excellent guide to setting up and running a freelance business - of almost any type, not just copywriting. There are so many good points in this book it is hard to single out examples. However, the need for proactive marketing and selling (and more of it than one might expect!) resonates with me after over ten years running my own business as a business coach and consultant as does the need for your own work space that is respected by other family members. There is a very good chapter on pricing (a.k.a setting fees). The writing style is lively and amusing. The interviews with other freelance copywriters offer a broader spectrum of ideas, reinforcing the main content of the book. I highly recommend this for anyone considering setting up in business as a freelance in almost any field, but in particular in copywriting.
