5.0 out of 5 stars classic chess instro collection 29 Oct 2013
By stevei
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I bought this as an LP from a remainder shop in the 90's and have now upgraded to the Cd with 2 extra tracks . Theres some really great performances here even though none were hits and it works well as a whole album. The only surprise was there is no album of chess instro hits Juke, Grumblin guitar etc, but thats not the fault of this collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Groovy! 2 July 2005
By Johnny Heering - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
What we have with this potpourri of Chess recordings is a series of ingenious variations on the popular instrumental format. A little blues, a little pop, a little jazz, a lot of fun. Not always categorizable, and different virtually from track to track. However, all of these pieces share a feeling of time and place, a sense of earthiness that prevades the bulk of Chess recordings of the '50s and early '60s, coupled with a hearty raucousness that creates instant mental images of smokey after-hours jams. Here is the track listing:

1. "Lucky Lou" by Jody Williams

2. "Wrinkles" by The Big Three Trio

3. "Blue Midnight" (alternate take) by Little Walter

4. "How High the Moon" by Chuck Berry

5. "Driving Home, Part 2" by Paul Gayten

6. "Soft, Sweet and Mellow Blues" (take 2) by Earl Brown

7. "Five Spot" by Otis Spann

8. "Little Eva" by Lloyd Glenn

9. "Ram-Bunk-Shush" by Gene the Hat

10. "Shimmy Shimmy Walk, Part 1" by The Megatons

11. "Coolin' Out" by J.C. Davis

12. "Mess Around" by Bo Diddley
5.0 out of 5 stars If You Enjoy JAZZ as well as BLUES, This is for You! 22 Nov 2007

This cd is a complilation of rare Chess instrumentals from the 50's and 60's. I actually bought this album for the unreleased Bo Diddley song "Mess Around". I did not expect to like every single track, but I do! I also have this on vinyl and the cd release includes two bonus tracks! Buy it here, buy it now, this one is difficult to find!!!
