Review

"Wrestling's 101 Strangest Matches is one of the most interesting books on Professional Wrestling in quite some time. Far from being a simple listing of odd bouts, the book provides in-depth background and context on each of the matches featured, revealing details that are both historically significant and genuinely entertaining. Comments from the wrestlers themselves reveal the little known details behind many of these infamous battles. Enjoy!" --dirtydirtysheets.com

"Pro-wrestling's a weird world at the best of times. Worked fights, carny slang and ridiculous characters and costumes add up to a slightly surreal, slightly deranged rarified atmosphere where grown men can defy gravity, pain and occasionally logic. But there's times when even that world goes a little bit mental. Which is where a fun new book by Oliver Hurley comes in. Wrestling's 101 Strangest Matches is a fantastic wee book charting the weirdest moments in professional wrestling history. From the moment Kendo Nagasaki started hypnotising his opponent to the day NY Times best seller Mick Foley lost his ear during a match, the best of the worst are all in there. It's great toilet reading, even if you're not much of a wrestling fan. Indeed, it probably helps if you're not, since going into it cold means you can be even more amazed at just how bonkers crazy some of this stuff is. And if you do know your onions, there's bound to be stuff in here that you've either never heard of, or tried desperatey to forget. Like the Viagra on a Pole match, or the Mass Transit incident. Or Crash Holly in the ball pool. In fact, the only thing that's not in there is this particular curio from WCW, when some bright spark at Centre Stage thought it'd be a great idea to have Steve 'Sting' Borden tag with - and be rescued by - Robocop. No, really..." --The Daily Record

"Wrestling's 101 Strangest Matches is a thoroughly entertaining read from start through finish. It is capable of being read in one sitting or in many short sittings. Covering everything from hilarious tales of winning by hypnosis to the extremely bizarre Japanese bath house matches. This is not meant to be a serious or informative look into the world of wrestling, Oliver Hurley accomplishes exactly what you expect he set out to achieve, compiling a list of some of the most amusingly weird moments in pro-wrestling all gathered together inside one handily sized, fun-filled, hard back book for hardcore wrestling fans and the casual fan." --wrestlingtruth.com

"You'll have immense fun with Hurley's book, a truly original look at a mad, bad and dangerous world. --Simon Garfield, author of The Wrestling

Experienced wrestling journalist Oliver Hurley, a regular contributor to Power Slam magazine, has scoured 100 years' worth of mat mayhem to reveal the pseudo-sport's oddest bouts, from the contest in which a tag team lost their championship belts six days before they won them, to the match that took place in an exploding swimming pool. With a cast that includes Hulk Hogan, Kendo Nagasaki, Muhammad Ali, a wrestling robot and a monkey, this book goes beyond the accepted canon of headlock history to celebrate the grap game at its very strangest.

- Features revealing interviews with the sport's stars from the past and present
- Includes 50 candid shots from the world's foremost wrestling photographers
- Foreword by notorious deathmatch wrestler Thumbtack Jack
- Breadth of coverage, from present-day WWE to old-school British wrestling, will appeal to a wide range of wrestling fans

A fun little read. 17 Oct 2010
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book recently to help pass a boring bus journey and it was the perfect purchase for such an occasion. This is one of those fun little books that certainly wont change your life but will make a dreary afternoon more enjoyable. The artstyle and layout is neat and some of the photos included are real gems. I had no qualms about picking the book up because I knew of Oliver Hurley as a writer for Power Slam magazing, hands down the best wrestling periodical there is, and thankfully the quality of the writing was consistent with his previous work.

If you're a wrestling fan who wants to know a little more wrestling history or simply wants to find a bunch of new and exciting matches to hunt down on youtube its a must buy.

A fan's pleasure 22 Jan 2011
Format:Hardcover
Strangest Matches? most definitely! What is good is that most of the matches are thoroughly researched and there is matches from all sorts of wrestling companies, be it WCW, WWE/F, TNA and CZW to name a few. My favourites are the stories of the floating wrestling ring and also of the one-legged wrestler that said he had the easiest nights work ever by letting himself get beaten up and to be the only person that knocked out a future UFC champion while rehearsing the match in question.

101 varied matches 6 Sep 2010
Format:Hardcover
This book covers a wide range of matches from throughout the eras and different companies. some really are weird but others are just filler, Chavo vs Rey in the gulf of Mexico match, not that interesting and repeated this year with Swagger and Kane, but some are really interesting so in all a fun book thats worth a read.
