We chose to get a Rovio after our Meccano Spykee expired: we were interested in the ability to control it from a mobile phone, the moveable head and the open programming interface. Sadly, our experience was that we couldn't get its microphone and speaker functions to work, despite trying three different browsers, firmware upgrades etc.
The WowWee technical support were next to useless, but credit to Otherland who gave us a full refund with minimum fuss.
Having seen enough to compare Rovio with the rival Spykee, these comparisons might be helpful to other robot buyers (assuming that you could get Rovio to work, that is):
* Ease of set-up: Equal. Both robots require you to install some software to get going. Spykee needs special software installed on any Windows/Mac PC that you use. You can control Rovio with any browser (PC or Smartphone), but for sound you still need Internet Explorer on a PC.
* Play value: Spykee is a bit more fun! You can make it play music and funny sounds.
* Movement: Rovio has the edge with the moving camera head and its surprising ability to move sideways. Spykee moves a bit better on rough surfaces and small steps.
* Creativity: Rovio is best - if you can program, but it's not a teaching toy. Spykee is very disappointing: despite having 'arms' and a 'head', nothing actually moves. The extra console buttons would be perfect for driving extra Meccano motors but have been wasted on flashing lights.
Good hunting, and if you do go for Rovio, do please tell us how you got it working!
