Product Description

Doctor Who’s Sonic Screwdriver is essential kit for time travelling escapades or household chores. It looks like, lights up like and even sounds like the Doctor’s favourite kit but is actually a fully functioning screwdriver. It’s perfect for all of those DIY jobs around the house. With solid metal construction and interchangeable screwdriver heads you have the best fun DIY tool ever made. When not in use the screwdriver bits (reversible Phillips and Flathead) fit neatly inside the sonic screwdriver. The screwdriver requires 3 AG10 batteries 1.5V (included). Warning, the sonic screwdriver will not necessarily help you in a final battle against the Daleks.

When I saw the description for this item I thought "Wow, a sonic screwdriver that actually works!" Well now i've got one and am I still impressed?

On the plus side the screwdriver looks the part and, thanks to its metal body, it feels the part too. The weight sets it apart from the toy versions and makes it feel more robust too. It is worth noting that it is only the bottom half that is metal. This part incorporates a magnetic bit holder, the 3xAG10 batteries (not 2xAA as in some listings) and a sound chip (which is activated by a button). The top half has the green light surrounded by non moving claws and contains the screwdiver bits when not in use.

The bad points, in my opinion, are as follows. First I found that the screwdriver bits were pushed so far into their storage compartment that I needed a pair of long nosed pliers to get them out. If inserted any less the compartment wouldn't close properly. Secondly the bit holder where you put the screwdriver bits to use them is about 1/2mm too small to take standard 1/4" screwdriver bits. This means that when the supplied bits get rounded out, as would be normal in anything beyond occasional use, you're not going to be able to replace them. Finally the bits themselves have an attractive green laquer coating that scratches off as soon as you use them.

In conclusion I'd say that the sonic screwdriver looks and feels good, but its value as a working screwdriver is more novalty than practical.

This is the same size (approx 215mm long) as the moving toy version of the same sonic in it's closed position. It weighs approx 208g with batteries and 'bits'. You would not want to drop it on your toes. It has a feel of robustness but time will tell. In general I would agree with the other comments about 'bit' quality and their housing but overall it is a great product. So much that I'm buying another, removing the bits and giving it to my son.

When I bought this product it was a spur of the moment purchase. With no prior research I found myself buying it. Expecting only a toy that would last 10 minutes I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived.

This product is noticeably weightier than the plastic toy equivalent. The bottom half of the screwdriver is metal, the top half plastic. This provides a good distribution of weight and makes it practical to use the screwdriver function.

This brings me nicely onto the screwdriver bits. They are coloured green, the same as the light of the sonic screwdriver and you could almost imagine them being the crystal of the real sonic screwdriver. It comes with 3 different sizes: Small, Medium and Large. All are double ended so you get a flat and Philips head of all sizes and they store neatly into the compartment inside of the top half of the screwdriver so that you could use it as a prop as well.

The only disappointment I have with this product is that the top half is fixed and so doesn't spring up like the one on the TV show or the toy version does. Apart from this, the product is excellent and makes a quality addition to the collection.

I love this screwdriver! its well built and comes in handy more often than you would think! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is a doctor who fan or even just the casual viewer of the show, as it looks cool and is really useful, the only negatives are that the sound effect is a bit off, its not really sonic screwdriver sounding but its not a big thing, and also the paint around the handle does chip off quite easily, I wouldn't say its worth 20 or 25 quid, but I picked it up for a tenner and it was money well spent!

A little disappointed when this arrived in the mail, it is good quality as it is made of metal, well the bottom half is, the top half is made of plastic, the sound doesn't really sound like the sonic screw driver at all, and the light can barely be seen. As for the screw driver part, the heads are stored in the plastic part of the screw driver, and they are difficult to remove from the storage area, when you have finally managed to get the screw bit that you need, and place it into the end, it bulky to use, and it slips. Also the screw bits are coated in green paint, which scrapes off as soon as you start to use them.

I'm a huge SCI-FI fan & have watched Doctor Who since i was a child, when i first saw this i thought it was just another toy then read it was an actual screwdriver. Any one who loves Doctor Who would love this, the sound isn't very realistic but the overall look, weight & size is great & it comes with 3 reversible screwdriver heads making up 3 flat head & 3 phillips heads all of useful sizes. All in all I'd say well worth it & fun to use.

Not especially good as a screwdriver nor sufficiently good as a sonic screwdriver replica. Construction is fairly cheap and the sound it makes is not authentic. Even so I have used it a couple of times as a screwdriver and the weight at one end is quite nice compared to the all plastic replica.

This is a fantastic tool to have - it just feels so right when you have it and really does make you feel like the doctor! I think it may have something to do with the weight of it as it is mostly made from metal, apart from the front end where the LED is. The only real criticism is where the button is placed, and how the sound is slightly wrong. The button- in my opinion- is place far to near the back edge (the one facing you) and is really annoying when you are operating the LED. However you can use your joint on your thumb which helps a bit. Yeah, the sound was slightly wrong, but I can live with it really.

Overall though, I really recommend this product, basically because it just feels so right, and like a real replica.

If you like replicas and sonic screwdrivers, and general doctor whoish stuff, get it!
(and its a great price!)
