Product Description

Book Description
A manifesto of sorts from Gerry Ryan - one of Ireland's best, best-known and most popular broadcasters

Product Description
Gerry Ryan on life, the world, the universe - and a few things besides. Here are his experiences, stories and opinions drawn from nearly thirty years of talking to the nation. It's a sharp, punchy read all told in his no-nonsense, irreverent, straight to the bone style. It's the best, the worst, the funniest, the most outrageous. And threaded through it's the story of coming of age as a broadcaster at the same time as Ireland became a truly modern country. A smart, sassy and wildly entertaining read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing...., 7 Nov 2008
By Michael Connell (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews
Bought this book a couple of weeks ago in the hope that it would paint an open and sympathetic view on Irelands most popular broadcaster. Most of his radio listeners will be familiar with his contoversial and witty banter on his morning shows, but this book only shows him in a bad light(as far as I'm concerned) and he comes out of this as a very unlikeable person.
Maybe the book was released at an unfortunate time, with the country heading into recession, but it is very ingratiating to read him write about how much money he has (and how he deserves a WHOLE lot more) and how he will only dine in the finest of restuarants with the best sommeliers to wait upon him.
I find it objectionable how he boasts about his 1st class travel with his family to JFK in New York, where he is ferried by limosine to his penthouse suite in a top hotel before picking up backstage passes for U2 at the Rockerfeller Centre. If he does do this, fair play to him, but if he had some sense of dignity, he wouldn't boast about it
The whole book seems to be an irony free vehicle to boost what seems to be an already inflated sense of his own ego which left a bad taste in my mouth.
I heard this was an "Entertaining read", but I felt positively unclean having read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars GERRY STANDS UP, 5 April 2009
By Graham Forbes "Graham" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a wonderful book. Beautifully and plainly written, with an honesty that is far too rare in modern biographies, Gerry Ryan does not seek to obtain the approval of the reader. At a time when most autobiographies are little more than glorified press releases, Gerry stands and presents himself as he is; he allows us to see him and his world without deceit or apology.
Terrific stuff.
