top man,
This review is from: Wotcheor (Audio CD)
Another winner from Jez. Songs of humour and social comment on a variety of subjects in the format of the old wotcheor radio programme, a real collectors item.

"Wotcheor!" Wonderful musical talent not to be missed!,
By Jeff Saxton - Published on Amazon.com
Jez Lowe has made a lovely, yet powerful collection of wonderful songs, "Wotcheor!" Wotcheor with his group "The Bad Pennies", along with some other very talented musicians on this album. It it starts off with a flavor of the folk music of northeastern England, which pays homage to the musical traditions that influenced Jez & his band, songs which are largely unknown to most American listeners. The graceful quaintness of these songs are very touching & after listening to several, I found myself thinking "How come I never heard this marvelous music before?" Just when you're settling in & getting comfortable, Track 10 shoves you into the powerful testimony of "The Judas Bus", whose forceful images & description of scabs, the "blackleg miner", who possesses such disdainful greed, that the lyrics shake you with their conviction & honesty. Afterwards, the final line of the song echoes in your mind. It also contains a cutting description of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the woman that destroyed the coal mining industry in England: "...that Downing Street Medusa..", which is especially pertinent in our country, as American's watch their own unions under assault & in the process of being destroyed by their government officials.I had the distinct pleasure seeing Jez in concert at "The Minstrel" in Morristown, NJ. I've have never seen ANY guitarist play with such conviction & passion, as he vigorously plucked the strings of his guitar with his bare fingers on "The Judas Bus". He also played a haunting song that touched upon 9/11, "Waiting For the All Clear", which juxtaposed that tragic event with an old man's memory of the London Blitz, a horror we American's never felt until that fateful day. He certainly gave a wonderful solo performance! I keep telling people who have never heard of him about two of the marvelous anthems he wrote, which are robustly performed by The Bad Pennies, called "Bare Knuckle" & "Hands Feet". Maybe after listening to those songs, we Americans will no longer passively standby while our rights our being gradually taken away. And "Gramophone Dancing" simply has to be one of the most beautiful songs I ever heard! It's so delightful, that it tends to bring tears to your eyes & you feel so warm & peaceful as the sounds of the violins dance all around you. The Amazon "sample" just doesn't do it justice! When you have finished listening to this delightful concept album, you lean back & reflect that you've just heard a masterpiece. I can't wait to see Jez again, this time with his wonderful band, "The Bad Pennies". You will be a "poorer person" if you don't purchase & listen to these songs! |
