Andy G says:
I don't think you need worry about a lack of encyclopedic knowledge, this story stands up on it's own simply because of the strenght of the storytelling. It sits essentially outside the usual DC universe, being a "what if" tale of the Batman years after anything that usually happens. It's brilliantly paced and just gripping. You might also want to try Jeff Loeb's The Long Haloween - fantastic.
