More About the Author

I started writing as an antidote to empty nest and soon found it an antidote to life in general. I am the sixth out of seven children, and was raised in the rural surrounds of central Pennsylvania. Early in life I spent a lot of time reading romance novels and practicing the piano. My first career was as a technical writer and editor in the Washington, DC, area, a busy profession that nonetheless left enough time to read a lot of romance novels.

It also left enough time to grab a law degree through an evening program, produce Beloved Offspring (only one, but she is a lion), and eventually move to the lovely Maryland countryside.

While reading yet still more romance novels (there is a trend here) I opened a law practice, acquired a master's degree in Conflict Transformation (I had a teenage daughter by then) and started thinking about writing.... romance novels. This aim was realized when Beloved Offspring struck out into the Big World. ("Mom, why doesn't anybody tell you being a grown-up is hard?")

I eventually got up the courage to start pitching manuscripts to agents and editors. The query letter that resulted in "the call" started out: "I am the buffoon in the bar at the writer's retreat who could not keep her heroines straight, could not look you in the eye, and could not stop blushing--and if that doesn't narrow down the possibilities, your job is even harder than I thought." (The dear lady bought the book anyway.)

I. Simply. Loved. Worth Kettering. He was a delicious type of Main Guy and definitely "dream worthy" material. Worth is the heir presumptive to the Grampion earldom but is estranged from the current earl - his brother, Hessian (Hess) Kettering, due to an offense Worth was not able to overcome since it involved the woman he loved being snatched from him, by Hess, when Worth was 17 years of age. The action wounded Worth to such a degree, he left home and never looked back. He has since made his way in life working as a solicitor - a very successful solicitor due to having a knack for investments. He invests funds for the wealthy, including the Price Regent, and the not-so-wealthy - including servants and opera dancers.

Upon learning he has an illegitimate sister who is being sent home from boarding school - he finds his world dramatically changes. His sister, Yolanda, who has spent several years "hidden" away in a boarding school is his deceased father's acknowledged by-blow. Hessian has known of Yolanda's existence and is in fact her legal guardian but the school cannot reach him, so they contact Worth to come and retrieve Yolanda and take charge of her life. Not only does his sister, Yolanda, need a home, he is also guardian of a little orphaned French niece - Avery - the daughter of his beloved sister who passed away while living in France. Feeling somewhat overwhelmed, Worth decides he must finally communicate with Hess regarding Yolanda and Avery - Hess is after all the head of the family.

Instead of remaining in town, Worth decides it would be best to decamp to his country estate, along with Yolanda and Avery, where he has been an absent landlord for the past five years. In truth, his staff doesn't even actually know what he looks like.

Very enjoyable - Grace B's characters are always interesting and her situations tho not always perhaps historically possible (an Earl's sister as a housekeeper?!) but I loved every chapter!

This was the first book by Grace Burrowes I have read and it definitely will not be the last if all her work is of this standard. The hero was a lovely naughty character with flaws and problems but he listened and was clever with it whilst the heroine was a really spirited young lady. There were times when something was mentioned which made me wonder if the characters had appeared in an earlier book but it did not distract from the overall enjoyment of this story.

If it were possible I would give the book ten stars! I absolutely loved both the hero and his housekeeper. Both of them were full of funny conversations and Worth was simply deliciously romantic guy with very straightforward and tenacious behaviour.
I would definitely recommend this book, it left me feeling lighthearted and with a smile upon my face. I simply couldn't put it down!

The story was quite entertaining but I found that the author just added more and more pieces of different stories to the plot which made a good read but really slow. Felt as if I had to plod through a load of stuff to get to the story of two people falling in love

What a boring book. Am a big regency romance fan and as this book was only 99p thought that I would give it a try. Have not come across this author before and if this book is anything to go by I will not be purchasing any of her books again. The story just dragged on and on without actually getting anywhere. Very disappointed indeed, one to avoid.

Wonderful book as all books by this author are. Never a simple romance but a complex set of characters that all interact perfectly but we always get the happy ending we crave. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
