Book Description

23 Dec 2013
Nick Mathers pulls Owen Butler from the freezing waters off the Norfolk coast, but Owen’s love can carry Nick back from the edge of oblivion. Abused horrifically as a boy, Nick Mathers has come to terms with his existence as a man. Mostly. Other days life seems a little much. Especially when Nick knows he’ll always be alone. On those days his thoughts turn black. He walks the Norfolk coast and considers the frigid embrace of the waves. And then, one stormy night, he finds someone who’s tasted just that. The beautiful stranger on the beach is near death, and Nick rushes him home to slowly nurse back to health. As he does, he finds a love unlike any other. Owen Butler’s body is as warm as the sea was cold, his heart as big as an ocean. And Owen is a man who swears to repay the favor. Nick can yet be saved from himself, and he will see that he is indeed a man…WORTH KEEPING. More About the Author

Susan Mac Nicol was born in Leeds, UK, and left for South Africa when she was eight. She returned to the UK thirty years later and now lives in Essex. Her debut novel "Cassandra by Starlight", the first in a trilogy, has recently been published by Boroughs Group Publishing in the US.

Sue has written since she was very young, and never thought she would see herself being a Romance writer, being a horror/psychological thriller reader all her life. But the Romance genre is now something very close to her heart and she intends continuing the trend. In fact, Sue has just completed a rather sexy and thrilling detective romance and her first LGBT gay male romance novel, a genre very close to her heart. So watch this space...

Some of the more interesting times in her life? Being kicked out of the local Church Youth Chapter when she was just sixteen, for being 'a bad influence' (she maintains it was called freedom of speech), a bad car accident in 1986 which almost cost her her life, life in a commune in the cosmopolitan suburb of Hillbrow in Johannesburg with guys who were - well, let's say not the everyday boys next door, and being picked up by a punter as a prostitute (again in Hillbrow) when she got lost on her first day at a new job and was looking for the place she worked at by walking up and down the streets in search of the office....

What she thinks you need to be a be a writer? Imagination, tenacity (for the constant re-edits) a sense of humour and most of all, PASSION.

About the Author

Sue Mac Nicol was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, in the United Kingdom. At the age of eight, her family moved to Johannesburg, South Africa where she stayed for nearly thirty years before arriving back in the UK in December 2000. She has written nine novels, two novellas and a screenplay since February 2012 and clearly believes in keeping herself busy. She has found herself wanting to stay in the genre that is M/M Romance so more can definitely be expected. Sue is a member of Romance Writers of America and Romantic Novelists Association in the UK. She is also a member of a rather unique writing group, called the Talliston Writer’s Circle, which in itself has a story all of its own to tell and lives in the rural village of Bocking, in Essex, with her family. Her plan is to keep writing as long as her muse sits upon her shoulder. Her dream is to one day make enough money to give up the day job and get that big old house in the English countryside overlooking a river, where she can write all day and continue to indulge her passion for telling stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth keeping! 8 Feb 2014

I loved this book and the intensity of the story. For me it was sometimes difficult to read but that only enhanced the reading experience. I fell in love with these characters and cared very much about what happened to them. I loved the setting and everything else about it. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantabulous read! 4 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Susan Mac Nicol has become one of my must read authors and this is because her books delve into the dark side of life and take the reader on an emotional tsunami of a read that I personally embrace.

Worth Keeping is one such read and touches in the delicate matter of child abuse and how the survivor copes with overcoming said abuse to try and achieve a semblance of normality in their life afterwards.

Nick Mathers has suffered an extreme abusive childhood with no one to protect him. In fact the one person he should expect to protect him was one of the instigators. How could he ever overcome such depth of despair?

The story picks up much later in Nick’s life where he is living a relatively sedate life as a Lighthouse guide on the Norfolk coast. He has his good days but then he has his dark days when his thoughts turn to how to stop the darkness. It was on such a night of contemplation that he found himself on the beach only to come across Owen Butler who has been washed ashore after he himself had turned his thoughts to drastic measures.

Owen had suffered a great loss and had found his days becoming unbearable, hence him being in the sea but for him it was also a turning point when he was washed ashore on Nick’s beach. The story then evolves of both coming to terms with their new found understanding of themselves and each other.

For me this was a meeting of two lost souls and even though at times I was frustrated at them both going from high elation and acceptance of each other to total rejection, it also was a joy to read of the relationship development.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning 4 Feb 2014

What an amazing story. So well written; beautiful setting and amazing characters. The story was intriguing and the dynamic between all the characters palpable. The sex was hot and really added to the story rather than just being the main focus. The backgrounds of the main characters was gripping and engaging - heart wrenching and heart warming. A fantastic book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A definite keeper 10 Aug 2014

Five stars means you really love the book, whilst I wouldn't use the word love it was a brilliant read, at times very moving, tense and uplifting.
Abuse of any kind is hard for people like me from a happy stable background to understand - how someone is capable of such atrocities inflicted on a child is beyond me.
This was a heart rending story with the longed for HAE, a chance walk and the even smaller chance of meeting a suicidal young man and saving him, then the story unravels from there.
I think the author dealt with this subject really well, I read the note at the end and she did her research. Child abuse if horrific but it goes on as we well know from the current celebrity revelations. Hopefully there will be a time when its stamped out but unfortunately I don't think that will ever be the case.
Nick was and is worth keeping, Owen thought so and I do too - so is this book. It's made me want to read more of her work, plus she's a Yorkshire girl - there's none better LOL
