Book Description

Beloved teacher Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe leads the journey through the valleys and mountains of Old Testament kings and queens, illuminating the painful confessions, the anger toward God, and the holy desires they modeled for generations to come. It's the unaltered, vulnerable grit of human experience that gives Psalms its credibility and makes it so valuable for building a real relationship with God.

Writing as they would to a dear friend, the psalmists—King David and others—compose a songwriter's masterpiece through their unfathomable awe of the Creator of the universe. Out of the bottomless well of human emotion and purity of expression come both cries of pain and shouts of joy—genuine expressions which not only elevate our respect for the psalmists themselves, but also draw us into a deeper relationship with our Lord.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful, but not spectacular. 10 Mar. 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This suffers from what many other commentaries on the Psalms suffer from, and that is that it is simply not long enough and hence lacks sufficient detail. I have reviewed other commentaries on the Psalms (namely Wilcock in BST) and two short volumes is not enough to deal sufficiently with a book of the Bible the length of Psalms. However, I have appreciated and benefited from much a what Warren Wiersbe has written in the past as he always has a very direct approach to the text (no waffling about or wasted time theorising) and he often makes some very good points that engage the readers and help them understand it. That being the case, this commentary will probably be quite helpful for private devotions, but would need to be read with a commentary or commentaries of greater depth if preaching through the Psalms as I do not consider there's enough here to really get the brain cells working in engaging adequately with the text.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good commentary 21 July 2013

I was a bit wary of Weirsbe, having read a few of his New Testament commentaries and been a bit disappointed, but this commentary on the Psalms is excellent. Catches the historical and cultural relevance nicely and then puts it into a modern faith perspective. I recommend it.

This book has opened my eyes to the beauty of the psalms and how they apply to our everyday lives. It has helped me understand what the authors meant. When I go through tough times I have passages of this book marked that I turn to time and time again. I use it with my bible.
