Amazon.co.uk Review

Having wangled tour-support slots alongside Semisonic and Joe Strummer, this West London foursome have certainly had the opportunity to get their music across to the right kind of people, because this debut album is jammed with intelligent rock drawn from an eclectic range of inspirations. On the whole, they fare better at knocking out nifty little instrumental hooks and rhythmic patterns than at writing the killer vocal lines that ultimately sell platinum quantities, but their ability to sound like a cleaner, more accomplished update of Britpop could find them a ready-made audience. If the aggressive close-harmony choruses of short, sharp blokey singalongs like "Yes!" can find a champion at Radio One, this is a band that could be huge. --Johnny Black

Firstly, I'll be honest and and admit that I met two of the band members on a number of occasions many years ago as a result of once knowing their parents, but this review is, nevertheless, written completely impartially. I actually think it's disgraceful that no-one's yet reviewed this album! And it's a terrible shame the band split and no longer make music.

I've been listening to the final album release on Spotify for a few weeks after somehow coming across it, but I'm going to grab a hard copy after losing my original CD some years ago. They deserve it for their hard work; the album has, for me, stood the test of time. In fact, listening to the Little Mothers' first album, The Worry, transports you to another time - only one you can't quite put your finger on: it could have been made at any time in the last thirty or forty years. I guess alternative-pop is the best way to describe the general style, with elements of folk rock thrown in here and there. There's a definite 60s feel to some tracks, while others might be better placed in the 70s or 80s.

One criticism on my part would have been that the harmonies on Something More could have been tighter and, in some places, the lead vocal might have been stronger, but it's a very interesting track with a decidedly melancholy feel. Picture Girl, which wasn't on the demo album I received as a gift from one of the band members when it was produced back in the 90s, shows how good they can sound with better production.

My personal favourites are, in order: Bad to Worse, with its carnival feel (it reminds me of that track from Lost Boys - I can't think of the name), Restless (Soul), Moody, with its excellent guitar solo and piano, The Worry (the title track), They Tell Me, Yes!
