Worried About the Boy is a 90 minute film, featuring talented newcomer Douglas Booth, Mathew Horne (Gavin & Stacey), Marc Warren (Hustle) and Mark Gatiss, for BBC2's season of celebratory programming on the 1980s. At its heart it is a coming-of-age story about a 19 year old boy moving to London, establishing his personal independence, and becoming an influential part of a fashion cult.
In the past 30 odd years, George O'Dowd has made more than a few headlines. This film concentrates in particular the period between 1980 and 1982, just before the success of Culture Club's Do You Really changed his life. Living in a squat on Great Titchfield Street, regularly attending the Blitz Club, falling in and out of love, being photographed for looking fabulous, forming a band... these are experiences that any 19 year old dreams of. George O'Dowd became famous all over the world simply by being himself.
The film is a compassionate biography of a much loved icon. Boy George's debut appearance on Top of the Pops was the defining televisual moment of 1982; it heralded in a new era of fashion and pop music. The film takes a wry look at Boy George's determination to stand out from the crowd - even a crowd as distinctive as the Blitz kids. His success was unprecedented - changing a whole generation's attitude to music and gender.

Format:DVD
What turned out to be a highly entertaining nostalgic trip, as presented by the BBC. Has only left a sour taste with the release of this DVD. I don't want to be too dramatic, the story still holds up and the performances are great. Douglas Booth really capitulates teenage George, Awesome supporting performance from Freddie Fox (Marilyn), Mathew Horne (Jon Moss) and Marc Warren (Steve Strange). The look of the film is amazing, and attention to detail was impeccable from Hair styles to clothes right down to the props of Boy George dolls identical to the real ones except with Douglas' face on the images.
However...and here's the sigh - an important character in this Teledrama has been glaringly omitted. The changing of music tracks in TV to DVD releases due to Licensing issues is not uncommon, but in this case the films previous soundtrack of 23 New Romantic & Psychedelic Glam gems has been stripped of all but four of them. Only one of the Siouxsie & The Banshees tracks, Bow Wow Wow and the two Culture Club tracks remain (not counting the the Helen Shapiro version of 'My Guy' which replaced the original Mary Wells version). Even Theatre Of Hate performing Original Sin part of the scene was edited out all together.
Not only did we loose the songs, but they were instead compensated by a 'sound-a-like' yet nondescript original score. No offense to the composer, but it didn't even touch the sides, and comes off like Ringtones as opposed to Realtones. For those of us that have seen the original broadcast can testify at the sense of what it was really like at the Blitz, visually and sonically. Loosing those tracks majorly stands out in this DVD release and for that I really do feel cheated because it's not entirely what I paid for or expected. Thank God I still have the broadcast version saved.

Excellent Film, but dissapointed when released on the DVD, as I purchased the film because of the love of the music from the 80s. Such classics like Human League, Kraftwerk, Visage were all cut from the dvd, and really spoilt the film for me, and was replaced with dodgy synth music.
If you want this DVD because of the great soundtrack that we heard on the TV, dont buy it.

I eagerly awaited the release of this DVD, in part because of the wonderful soundtrack..what a disappointment. Where are OMD, kraftwerk, Hazel O'connor? Its just not the same without the original songs. Still worth a watch if only for the beautiful Douglas Booth, but certainly not what I was expecting.

Disappointing
I, too was very disappointed. The BBC version included various major 80s hits which complimented the actions of the cast - the DVD I received omitted most of these replacing them... Read more
