4.0 out of 5 stars Traditional horror with a PZB twist..., 4 Jul 2002
As a huge fan of Poppy Z Brite's novels, I was eager to read this collection of earlier work - I'd read her later collection of short stories, Self Made Man just prior to this and was just as impressed as I had been by her novels. This collection disappointed me slightly though, not because the stories aren't fascinating, dark and extremely well crafted, but because they differ from Poppy's later work which I so enjoy. I suppose there's less homoeroticism, less gore and more traditional horror, more subtlety - which I did enjoy, but just hadn't quite expected. Brite's prose style is consistently vibrant and intriguing - particular favourites include both stories featuring Ghost and Steve (of Lost Souls), His Mouth Will Taste of Wormwood and a story about a goth girl living with a ghost, the name of which I can't remember and I don't have the book to hand! This would be a great introduction to Brite's work, but those who've read practically everything else she's done may be surprised, although not at all unpleasantly so - my disappointment in this book soon changed, as the different style only serves to illustrate how Poppy has grown as a writer, and truly found her own style. Horror and PZB fans alike will love this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A splendid introduction to the world of Poppy Z. Brite, 1 Mar 1999
By A Customer
This collection of short stories was my first encounter with the writings of Brite, and to say that it had a tremendous impact on me would be, to put it bluntly, an understatement. Brite's way of telling a story is compelling, magnetic to such an extend that I found myself absolutely mesmerized by the book before I even knew what was going on. Her settings, characters, milleaux of decadence and eroticism are described with an edge that I have never experienced in any other contemporary writer. Brite is a treat for any horror-story/dark-fantasy voluptuary, yet in hindsight, and after reading all of her novels, I must confess that they will present to the reader a somewhat greater reading experience than her short stories do, and hence I shall restrain myself from awarding this book with 5 crowns, despite the "nostalgic" value it has to me.

a reprint of earlier work, swamp foetus, these stories form a lacklustre by the numbers collection, the plots are thin, the characters banal stereotypes and uninteresting. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I think Ms. Brite's is comparable to Harlan Ellison in her ability to mix startling imagery with vivid emotion. This book is a steal at such a cheap price.
