5.0 out of 5 stars two legs vs eight legs 29 Nov 2009
By Paul Tapner TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
latest doctor who audio play to feature paul mcgann as the doctor and sheridan smith as his companion lucie miller. This is the climax to a two part story that started withThe Eight Truths (Doctor Who: The New Eighth Doctor Adventures) and also ties in very slightly with earlier story Orbis (Doctor Who: The New Eighth Doctor Adventures). You could get into this without having heard the latter but it's better to have heard the former before trying this.

In two episodes on one disc each of roughly twenty five minutes in duration the story continues from the climax to the eight truths, with alien spiders having taken over the earth. and lucie. the doctor and a couple of unlikely allies fight to deal with the situation. meantime lucie fights to regain control from the being possessing her. These are great scenes that allow sheridan smith to play two very different roles and lucie's never say die attitude to the situation she's in is very appealing.

The Doctor of course saves the day, but the style in which this is done, as the episodes breathlessly jump from one plot point to another, giving the doctor some great moments of taking the moral high ground, are so good that they will keep you hooked throughout. And one regular supporting character does something you wouldn't have expected, leading to a very emotionally powerful scene.

The story ends with two doctor and lucie, two good friends, off for a break. and we'll see them again in the forthcoming doctor who: death in blackpool. I look forward to it.

The disc ends with fourteen minutes of interviews with some of the cast. These are well worth listening to, not least for the contribution from former hitchhikers guide to the galaxy star stephen moore who's a very good interviewee. The sound quality of them can vary, though, but don't let that put you off.

5.0 out of 5 stars The end of another season... 3 Nov 2009
By Tony Jones VINE™ VOICE

..and a character faces their final curtain!

Spoliers aside, the title of this adventure, which follows on from Eight Truths takes the plot of Metabilis spiders (hence Web) taking over the world (and then the galaxy!) via the cult of the Eight Fold Truth and the stellar convertor.

Stephen Moore is still great as the cult leader, and Lucie gets to have her body taken over displaing her into a cyber space along with growing numbers of alien races as the Doctor races (again) to save humanity and the cosmos at large. Meanwhile we have the Headhunter to deal with as she attempts to play all sides against the middle for profit.

Although when written down in black & white it all seems rather formulaic, this again shines due to casting, acting, script, direction and production. This is a fitting end to a high quality run of eight episodes for the eighth doctor (enough eights!)

3.0 out of 5 stars Worldwide Web (Doctor Who: The New Eighth Dr. Adventures) 29 Oct 2010

"Worldwide Web" is a part of a two-part story ("The Eight Truths" being Part One) which turned out to be OK. The whole story centered on the return of the Metebelis Spiders; this time they were trying to take over the world, and Lucie gets caught up in it with the Queen Spider taking her over, using her as host. Sounds like they were trying to repeat something out of the Pertwee era because the story seemed sort of redundant to me. I'll give it about three stars out of five.
